Chess X - X is for Mystery?

So much fan-fare about chess X I downloaded it.  It looks good but how do I go about analysing my games?

I am far from skilled with these things.   Is someone with patience willing to swap some PMs to get me underway?

I might be able to help you a bit. I'd never really used ChessX before, but after 5-10 minutes of playing with it, I think I understand how to analyze games with it. (Reading the Help file helps a bit.)

However, I don't think it can graph the analysis results, so if you'd like graphs, you might want to consider another GUI. Scid vs. PC can do a basic graph, and Lucas Chess can make an analysis graph with so many features it'll boggle your mind. (The many analysis features in Lucas Chess aren't really any harder to use, either.)

@EscherehcsE - I tried to install Lucas Chess but Windows Defender blocked the install. Do you know of any issues with it?

I don't really know - I have Windows 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials; In addition, I've always used the portable version of LC. I've never gotten any MSE warnings with LC portable.

Oops, almost forgot to ask - Did you download the LC installer from the official site?

Yes, from the official site. No matter if I chose "Portable" or "Installable" it downloads the same file (LucasChessPortable1102). I'm running the latest Win10 with Defender, which installed about a week ago, and it says it's an "unknown publisher", so that is probably the reason.  I try it again later, thanks.

There is definitely something wrong with the download process for this new 11.02 version. If I use the browser "Save File" download method, I get the full file download, but the file name is a very long series of random characters with no file extension, and if I try to execute the file, it will complain about an unknown publisher. However, when I use my "DownThemAll!" download manager, the download works fine sometimes. (I am getting both the portable and installer versions.)

How do I do a basic analysis graph using SCID

Well, I use Scid vs. PC. Some help info is available in the Help index, under "annotating games automatically".

But, in a nutshell, after opening a game from a PGN or Scid file, you would go to "Tools --> Start engine 1". Then, in the engine analysis window that pops up, you'd click on the "annotate" icon. A "Configure Annotation" box now pops up with a bunch of annotation settings. Configure the settings, then click on "OK". The auto analysis will start on the game. You can also go to "Tools --> Score graph" to bring up a simple graph of the scores for each move.

Yes, I also use SCID vs PC and the annotation feature. However I was not aware of the "Score Graph" feature. I am trying it now and it looks alright. In the past I have used online graph makers and entered the data manually to provide a graph of vote chess games for the members to review. I stopped doing it because of the time involved but now I can again include a graph in post-mortems..

Bit confused why people prefer scid vs pc over scid.  I think scid is tons better.  Scid vs pc is clunky and tries to do too many things (if you want to play vs. the computer, there are better programs to do that with, no idea why a whole fork is needed to shoehorn that in - just use Lucas Chess which is a dream for playing against the computer).

I guess I should try out Scid again. I never said Scid vs. PC was better than Scid; Scid vs. PC is just what I have installed on my PC.

Oh I know, it's just that I almost never see anyone recommend Scid, but Scid vs. PC.  Just seems strange to me.

Well, I think the original reason for so many people switching to Scid vs. PC was that Scid development was inactive for so long, and someone started active development of Scid vs. PC. At least that was the reason I switched. Now I guess someone is actively developing Scid again?

Yeah there have been new features in scid since there has scid vs. pc.  I think scid vs pc had a release recently, but it was just bug fixes.  Before that, scid was actually more active.  Both have kind of stopped now.

Within the last few days, I had reason to upgrade to the latest Scid vs. PC version (which I had been putting off). I figured that since I was installing stuff, I might as well also install Scid. So now I have both programs installed; Maybe I'll alternate between the two to see which one I prefer.

P.S. I have heard that the ScidvsPC developer is hoping to add CQL (Chess Query Language) to ScidvsPC ver 4.19, which would be cool. I don't know if this will also eventually be incorporated into Scid.
