Chessnut Air or DGT Pegasus?

Hi there,

I am a beginner/intermediate and I wonder which e-board you prefer and why, between the two in subject

Thanks a lot

I own both, I prefer the Air over the Pegasus because:

The Air is actual piece recognition, if you put the W King on d1 and the W Queen on e1 it knows you have the wrong pieces on the squares. The Pegasus just knows there is something on the square.

The Air/app integration has been very good, the Pegasus was flaky and not consistent.

I like the board for the Air, more of a solid chess board that the Pegasus.

Those are my thoughts, your mileage may vary.

are the leds brightly visibles in a room enlightened?

Inside you should be fine, bright sunlight outdoors you will have an issue with the Air.

Has the DGT Pegasus app been improved with resent updates? I'm making the same purchase decision. I got told not to look at square off.

DGT has released a new app for Pegasus (the previous one had some bugs which have been fixed). On Android it works perfectly (on iOS I have no idea).
The other compatible apps are the same ones you use on Chessnut air (WhitePawn, ChessPgnMaster, ChessDojo etc.)
The recognition of the pieces in Chessnut air (which is so praised as an element of superiority compared to Pegasus) is not desirable for me because if I lose a piece I will have to buy an entire set again and, above all, on Pegasus I can use any wooden or plastic set I like it by simply gluing an aluminum disk onto the base of the piece. I think some nice wooden pieces on Centaur and Pegasus look beautiful.
I think you have to choose based on the design you like best. the two boards do the same things. I prefer Pegasus in terms of size and design.
Chessnut air has a 35mm square. For me it's too small. But it's always a matter of personal taste. For others, an even smaller board such as the Millenium e-one or Chessnut-Go may be ideal.
Pegasus has 40mm squares.

In the photo you see the effect of the wooden pieces on my DGT CENTAUR. Pegasus is aesthetically the same. It's just a little smaller.

I've been following this thread because I'm in exactly the same dilemma.

From what I see, most people here seem to lean one of two ways:

Chessnut Air = “it just works” + full piece recognition
DGT Pegasus = prettier, cheaper right now, bigger squares/pieces, but some worrying reports about misreads/freezes.

Where did you actually end up ordering from, and which one did you choose in the end? Any regrets months later?

I know that a few of you had issues with Pegasus but youtube is full of (older) videos where it just works so it's hard to take a decision. Nobody here has a good experience with DGT Pegasus?

A friend of mine bought Pegasus a couple of years ago and said that he couldn't play against bots. I don't know if that's possible now.

With Chessconnect, yep wink

I have a DGT Pegasus, and I’d say it works fine 90% of the time. The problems are either move transmission or board freeze ups. It’s disappointing because there’s a lot to like about it otherwise. I bought it so I could play using some of my older wood sets (modified with metallic stickers). Unfortunately, it’s not reliable enough for me to play against other people, but I will use it against computers, though I don’t really use it much since my other eBoards perform better. I’ve had a Millennium Chess Genius Exclusive since 2018 and don’t remember ever having any problems with it. I also have a Chessnut Go and I’m really happy with it. I’ve only had two instances where it didn’t perform as expected, and it may not have been the board’s fault. In both cases I was playing a human over the web using the Chessconnect app. In the middle of a game the moves stopped displaying on the board so I had to continue the game on my tablet. I forget how, but I managed to correct things and finish the games on the board. Other than that, the Chessnut has worked fine. I don’t think I’d buy a DGT product again, but I’d consider Chessnut and Millennium in future.

Chessnut is times better than Pegasus in many ways!
