I just noticed  a great sale with 30% off on Official Staunton's fine line of sets, boards & boxes. Also, the Piatigorsky set is back in stock!

They pay Mike $20 million dollars a year to promote their business on chess.com so they can sell an extra set per year.

If you have read this equipment sub-forum for any length of time you would know that Mike does not get paid, he enjoys sharing his finds with the chess.com world.

Several users here do that.

Do you have anything constructive to add here or are you just wanting to stir the pot?

Not a thing. Please don't go there. Most of us want others to share such information.

Not to mention, goodknightmike needs no prompting to share this info. We can all attest that he really loves that Piatigorsky set!

It never ceases to amaze me that when one us either reviews a set favorably or brings a sale to the forums attention, the first thing that comes up is "how much were you paid?" That's one of the reasons why I don't post as often as I used to do. It's also why every one of my reviews starts and ends with disclaimers. Even then, the trolls come out.

Thanks, Mike, for being an encourager and friend to others on the forum. You have added to both my knowledge and my collection in the last two years. You, Chuck Grau, Up, Rsava, and others are the reason that the forum stays mostly on point.

You're welcome Robert, collecting  Staunton sets has been my passion for over 30 years. Its friends like you, Cgrau, Up,  Rsava and others with your postings  that makes our hobby even that much better.  Putting up with the "troll factor"  is a small prcie to pay for the wonderful reviews and postings by you, Cgrau, Up, Rsava and others. I can't wait for your next review or forum topic!

This is an equipment and book thread. I see nothing wrong with giving the readers of this forum a heads up on very exceptional sales.  In no way do I see what GNM did as blatant, in fact I welcome it, only wish I had more money.  happy.png

What you can not do is advertise any on line chess playing site which directly competes with this one.

Having said that I want to point out to the readers that McFarland's sale is ending today.  I doubt if you will find brand new McFarland books for 30% off and you can also order future releases.  They also take much care when they ship you the books.  This is where I order all my new McFarland books, that is when they have a sale which isn't very often.

@wiscmike, thank you for that link. I had never heard of them but am very interested in some of the books (non-chess) that I saw.

If I didn't already have this book I would have ordered it on this sale.  The price is almost less than what it was back in 1998, with the 30% off, when it was first released. 2543 games and the book is well done on high quality paper and of course library bound.  Alexander Alekhine’s Chess Games, 1902–1946

I find this thread really inadequate.
It has made me buy another set, which I don't really need, just because of the price.

just kidding happy.png

I was considering some time ago the Leningrad and now it was the time ...
And now, as you know "Opinions are like butts. Everyone has one", so here mine...
I really don't care if the distributor itself would have made the offer, there is no spamming in the forum and I'm mature enough to look for other prices, manufacturers and sites in Internet.

Even, I wouldn't mind if OS would reward any of you for the reviews or this kind of communications. As I said, I don't consider my self stupid, so I could have an objective view even with that.
Having here some manufacturers, designers and distributors, as official staunton, Izmet from Best Chessmen Ever and Noj, etc makes this forum better. Much better, indeed.
I don't think 10-20 chess sets would make the difference for them, but here they are taking feedback and showing great products.
Chessbazaar and other places have started to offer dubrovniks and russian sets after a lot of discussion here.
coincidence? maybe, but I would like to think that they read the forum and take it into consideration.

They suggest and show, and it is great.
I can not think in someone complaining because BCE offered or publicited here their great magnetic chessboards.
I can not think of someone that would complaint for official staunton presenting here the Piatigorsky set.
In fact, what I miss here are other companies, such as Chessbazaar, doing the same approach and establishing the same kind of dialog.

Finally, thanks GNM!, you showed a good offer and I don't feel anyhow tricked, in fact I want to have and enjoy my set ASAP.

Thanks a lot. I am looking to buy a new set and found a beautiful one at HoS. 200 euros for the fierce knight combo. ☺Went for the checkout, and realized it'd be another 200 for shipping. 😕 So disappointed. Above my budget. Any suggestions appreciated. Keep em coming ps. Since I am based in Europe, any ideas?

depends on what you want to buy.

Official staunton is a good option. I purchased from them twice, and again this week. No complaints. A bit more expensive but you get what you pay for.  You will have reasonable shipping costs, no customs.

Chessbazaar has really good sets for cheap price, I have bought about 15 to them. In the expensive ones I rather buy Official Staunton. No shipping costs. So far, no customs.

Those are the ones I recommend for Indian made sets.

If you want polish, spanish, french (chavet) sets there are specific pages for each one of them.

With a budget of 200€ I would go to OS. The most similar to HOS here in Europe.

Best regards

I think it's great that we have a forum like this where we share the latest in equipment (and offers from companies) in this way. I wouldn't have even known about some companies otherwise and I'm glad that I do now. I myself used the 30 % off to buy the 3,5 inch king set recently released by OS. Looks great from the pictures and can't wait to get it.
