Official Staunton's Piatigorsky Cup Reproduction Chess Set & History

I am thinking you can reproduce any piece since nothing was filed for. But hey I am not a lawyer, just a person who enjoys collecting chess sets that are repros since I will never have the deep pockets for the originals.

The Steiner family should have defended their rights to the design years ago. Selling the remaining original stock of the pieces in 1966 and not going any further with it would seem to have abrogated whatever "rights" remain.

Who said the Steiner family didn't do anything to "go further with it"?  Did anyone bother to ask?

Beyond that, I find it incredible that you would place the onus on the Steiner family to have "defended their rights to the design," rather than on those who would presume to deny those rights exist.

Clearly there is NO legal claim to rights because of the reasons already highlighted in this debate, plus the fact that no one is able to find a patent or other yielding a search via the approriate databases....so I am pleased to continue in the Official Staunton reprduction of this set

Well, the Piatgorsky set from Carl (GM4U) arrived today, and it is just as nice as claimed. Set No. 4 of the 50 limited edition sets. I presume Carl is keeping No. 1, and goodknightmike undoubtedly has No. 2. Who else here bought one?

Robert, my sentiments exactly. I just can't stop looking at this beautiful set. Carl bestowed Set No.1 on me. I will post pics on this magnificient  set shortly

You're welcome Bobby, but as I said before, Carl gets all the credit for this undertaking of such a fabulous and historic reproduction set.

Same here, they landed all in the same day it looks like. The set is amazing, overwhelmed for sure.  I now feel like getting the Piatgorsky Tournament book out and play through the games. Loved the picture of Fischer & Spakky with the Mrs looking over.  Just added the finishing touches.

Good idea Mike, I think I'll join you!  No question, Carl certainly put the finishing touches on this set by adding a colorful folder, COA and informative Piatigorsky Cup historical pamphlet.

You're welcome Robert, but all the credit goes to Carl for accepting my recommendation and making this awesome set possible for collectors like us. I can't tell you enough how happy this set has made me.  I too look forward to playing with this wonderful set.  I assume you finished your painting chores to unpack your set?

No such luck, Mike. I just took a break. I'm painting the whole house. The kitchen and dining room are finished, the living room and central core of the house are what I'm doing now. Gotta get that done no later than next Wednesday. Then I get to take a long break and another cruise before I tackle the upstairs bedrooms.

Robert, So the old saying "a man's work is never done" is true. Have a wonderful time on your cruise, where are you going?

Sounds like a wonderful time  Robert, I'm sure you will enjoy your cruise!

This pieces are not available any more in original staunton? The link don't work and I can't find them. Anyone knows the reason?

Fer8799

Also one question, do anyone know why they decided ti do It with a 5'' size? For me It looks enormous! Thanks in advance!

alexmares50

that is a beautiful set...definitely on my radar.  Just waiting for a few things to fall into place first and then will probably pull the trigger on getting one

Hi Alex, I have written to "original staunton" about this chessmen, that seems to be out of stock on their shop. After his answer, I will decide if to buy or not the chessbazzar repro. I will post this info here.

Hi

thank you for your message - we pulled production of this set simply because the CB version and HOS version kinda flooded the demand .....

Thanks for you quick answer. It's pity because in another thread it is told that the HoS version was about 300$, but the price now in HoS web is about a ridiculous 750$!!

Also, I think your repro was the better, since the one of CB has a knight far away from the original and the HoS one is in fact, is carved with more details than the original design!!

original_rude_boy

not feeling these: decent, but bland.

dubrovnik (the maurović redesign), gothic by peter ganine and the brilliant marcel duchamp readymade sets are the best, everything else is lemonade.
