Scid vs PC, WinBoard, Arena... all of these chess GUIs will load pgn databases.
You can also "open" it with TextPad or Notepad, of course... but that's probably not what you are referrrning to.
Also try chessx you can download the latest version at www.box.com/chessx
In Windows, you can open a PGN file in Notepad or any text editor...or are you trying to open it in a GUI?

I think I just said that.
I think the free ChessBase Reader is good to open pgn files also...
But I think to answer @bkklou question more correctly would be for you to check:
- what program did you open pgn files with previously?
- Try open (run) that program. Maybe that program has been compromised somehow.
- Or, you may (knowingly or not) have recently installed a new program that has changed the "file association" in your PC. In this case, you can simply set this "file association" to tell PC to open pgn files with this program again.
Hi all,
For some reason I am unable to open a 'pgn' file. This just occurred and I don't know why. I need to download a 'pgn' application. Can someone help me on what I need and where to find it.
So, right now I can't open games in chess databases :(
Many thanks
Lou
