Plastic, not fantastic …

Thanks Greg and I’Matt - definitely plastic and I assume - from prior comments in the Knubbel thread - that these are 70’s or ‘80’s … that said, it seems a very hard plastic (sorry if that is a stupid comment but I can’t think of a better word). The white pieces are an incredible creamy colour and translucent when held up to the light but the maroon pieces not translucent at all… they have a Bakelite-like quality/feel. It’s all a mystery … but a mystery that I’m glad to be investigating!

Here’s an interesting set. I imagine circa 1980 - perhaps a tad earlier. Made in New Zealand … the pieces are lightly weighted, felted and easy to play.

While not for everyone’s taste - for my taste, this set fits into the ‘fantastic’ category … I’m chuffed to have found these pieces for my collection.

Beautiful. They really managed the white pieces to look as if they were made from crushed stones.

In my eyes, this fits the fantastic category… as does the set above. 😊

The longer I have these pieces, the more I like them. 😊

Yeah, beautiful! Such an unusual finish for plastic pieces.

Stunning board as well! Where did you get it? The set and the board are such a good match.

Hi WK,
Thanks! I purchased the board second-hand locally; I’m not sure of the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the pieces are too big for this board but the colour match is lovely.

In case you have any use for it, I isolated, perspective-corrected, and upscaled the chess pieces of your New Zealand tournament set for personal documentation—I figured I would share it.

Yes, I like plastic chess pieces. I am not into expensive chess sets. This is my analysis chess set for many years now and it suits my needs. If I am not mistaken, they were probably from the 80s.

Another set for the fantastic category. This a plastic Lardy. Weighted, felted and manufactured to look like wood - these pieces are functional and durable. Better still, I believe they were made in France, albeit I do not have the original box for either of the two sets that I have in my collection.

Even in the flesh, it is very hard to tell the difference between these plastic pieces and my authentic Lardy’s. Perfect for the pub or anywhere for that matter!

Vive la France. 🇫🇷

Fascinating! Any idea from what year they are?

@WandelKoningin - yes, to my knowledge, after speaking to a friend and expert collector in France - the wonderful @Walterbiensur - it looks like Lardy was marketing these around 1974 - however - with no box and provenance, I cannot be 100% sure my sets are these but, I think they may be. I don’t mind - either way - they are simply excellent plastic pieces.

Another Danish Union Set

Great analysis set to hold onto your captures. (nicknamed my abacus set)

Plastic board above in rain...

The best plastic chess set ever was made by Jaques of London. I have this set and it is really work of art. I have not seen another plastic Jaques set for the past 20 years so I guess JOL must have produced very limited number of these plastic sets.

Chess is an outdoor sport.

That is the wet set... not the wind set. I've several sets according to conditions. I've got one crazy buddy who has played me into the snow and storms on the marathon days.

Fantastic plastic Kasperov set. Don't let the water transfer printing fool you.
