Post Your Chess Sets

Powerdigit, you will soon find that one isn't enough.  I appreciated hearing your story and that you found a set that will bring you joy whenever you do battle.  For an analog clock that truly brings it all together, I recommend the Hetman made in Poland.  Large faces, smooth lever control instead of plungers and tilted back for easy viewing.  Even has an extended flag system for accurate timing under 2 minutes.  Sometimes it's just fun to play using a timer that you can feel the tension waiting for flags to drop.

These Basic Plastic Chess Sets...have to be the Best in the World! Especially Playing in a Pub!

Dislike.  Not enough contrast between light squares and white pieces is the major problem.  Also the dark squares are too dark for the black pieces, but that's at least almost ok.  I also hate the pieces are too big for the board (you should be able to do this with the pawns:

and still have them centered in the squares).

I would need a board with 2.75 in. squares for my Sher-E-Punjab pawns to do that.

Hey Powderdigit, I enjoyed reading your comment and seeing your chosen set and board. Looks beautiful. I'm new to this forum and like you spent some time (actually a LOT of time) online looking for a set of chess pieces. I kept coming back to the Sher E Punjab series at Chess Bazaar though I thought it might be a bit too non traditional. So I ordered my other fave the Shera series from them. A safe bet to be sure. But as fate would have it I went and peeked at the Punjab set again a day later and quickly got on their chat box to inform this understanding fellow about my change of heart (as my wife wisely predicted I would). The order was changed much to my happiness and relief. Whew! If I had the money I would have purchased both but you know how that goes. The set hasn't arrived yet so I wait, however it's a Christmas present to moi from the Mrs so I'll have to wait again. It will be a difficult wait - I may develop a nervous twitch. I'll post a few pics if I can find out how to do that. I don't have the little button needed to post images, or if I do, I can't find it. Maybe I need more posts - dunno.  Anyway, very nice set and board.

Hi Brynmr, That's a funny story - I can absolutely relate! I was jumping between two sets too. Your wife sounds wise like mine - indeed, my wife knows me better than I know me ... if that makes any sense! :-) You won't regret going with your original pick, I'm sure. Funnily enough - mine was supposed to be under the Christmas tree too however, as this was my first purchase - I wanted to ensure the quality was spot on and quickly query, if not. After inspecting it ... we couldn't put it back in the box - it looks to fine! So.... no pressie under the tree for me this year.... or maybe a small one. Perhaps a chess clock or something. ;-) (On that note thanks Alleenkatze for the tip - I'll add it to the list to investigate.) PS - on photos - Brynmr, I could not post photos on my phone - only my laptop were the interface has more functionality - very intuitive. I don't know if that helps you or not. Good luck and enjoy you set when you get it.

Yeah, its just the perspective. Board is 23" and squares are 2.375.

Size looks fine to me. That's the Shera Staunton set? Which site did you buy it from? Love it!

@AlydaJade , love those! happy.png

Here's the Sher E Punjab set I ordered from Chessbazaar - still waiting on delivery. It's about the coolest set I've ever seen. Not exactly traditional and as far as I know Bobby Fisher never used it but I don't care. I love it.

Nice @Brynmr - I love that knight especially happy.png

Avatar of Brynmr

@Aida_Amin I read somewhere in this forum that if you don't love the knight you're likely to not love the set or words to that effect. I love the knight. If I had one criticism I'd change the pickelhaube type crown of the king to something a bit less elaborate and threatening. Speed chess anyone?

Tommy....I totally agree with your decision. Gorgeous set! It's all about what you like.

Avatar of Brynmr

@MCH818 Exactly my thinking. I even toyed with the idea of making a surgical alteration. I'm wondering if the set provides an alternate finial for the king. I believe some sets do that. Probably not but we'll see.

Avatar of forked_again

I think it is a fine pickelhaube!

I haven't received the set yet so dunno unless it would have been advertised on their site.

Hey Brynmr, a wonderful set you have chosen. What a Chrissy present! I just went and checked some photos on the CB site and there’s one shot of the bud rosewood pieces all together and I reckon the pieces harmonise really well; yeah the pickle-thingo is tall but that’s a defining characteristic and works well with the pawns, I reckon anyway. Enjoy! PS - and hey, you may need another - more utilitarian set - for robust speed play ...that’ll be my excuse for another set one day. 😉

I received the set today and I am blown away! Better than expected! I love the grain of the boxwood! The pieces are quite weighty and I love the (satin type) finish being not a gloss kind of guy. @Powderdigit The finial on the King's crown look more appropriate live than the online pics but moving the pieces about on my imaginary chess board (still await the board delivery) shows me you have to be careful around the King. Since this is a Christmas present and I have 48 hours to notify on any defects I couldn't tuck the box away for a month soooo I examined every piece - lucky me. I found only one small defect. There were slight weight differences of individual pieces but that doesn't bother me. But my eye goes right to the cut in this bishop's mitre so I'll be asking for a replacement. If they think I'm being too picky I'll offer to buy a replacement bishop - no worries.

Avatar of Brynmr

@MCH818 No alternative finial.

Avatar of loubalch

That's a legitimate call on the bishop.Get a replacement.

All you have to do is say you are a member of Chess.com and would like to post how well they took care of your issue.....That goes a long way.....Good luck

Avatar of alleenkatze

You won't have any trouble getting a replacement Bishop from CB.  Just don't wait too long.

I'm on it.
