Post Your Chess Sets

I think most chess sets are designed by people who love to play chess, not by National Socialists or members of the Politburo. If one chooses to associate these designs with the political system in control at the time of their creation, one is free to do so (no judgment here).

60's Soviet Era Repro

1960s Latvian Repro

When I'm playing with the Soviet set, I'm imagining players like Botvinnik and Smyslov and Spassky. The Latvian set reminds me of great Latvian players like Nimzovitch, Tal, and Alexei Shirov.

I imagine, regardless of how controlled they were by the Soviet system, that it all disappeared when they sat down at the chessboard, with pieces much like these. For those few hours, they were in control. For those few hours, they were free men.

Nice whisky collection also 🙂 or are those empty now?

The bottles are mostly empty and gone. Most of the boxes in the image contain chess sets. I still have about eight ounces of Bunnahabhain and need to find a chess set worthy of the box.

I’ve emptied at least half a dozen bottles of Glenlivet first fill in the past year or so. Pretty good Scotch that is affordable. Not in the same league as Bunnahabhain or Old Pulteney, however.

This thread has gotten out of hand.
If you want to start another thread but do not want people to post make sure you block them before you post a new topic.
If you want to talk politics and religion there is the Forum "OFF TOPIC"  I was just informed that politics and religion will not be tolerated in "OFF TOPIC" either. Maybe message each other and continue your arguing that way.

Yes it is a sticky stating that politics and religious topics are not allowed in "OFF TOPIC"  Again my mistake. The sticky note does state and I quote "If you would like to discuss religion or politics, you may do so in many of the private clubs on Chess.com. " Maybe that is a better idea but I still like you can message the person and you can also block anyone you wish if they bother you with a direct message.

While I feel @TundraMike was absolutely correct to lock this thread,  I invested the last 20 minutes of my time editing the most egregious religious/political/personal-attack comments to preserve and restore the proper spirit of this thread.

I don't like wasting my time, so I would suggest commenters stay reasonably on topic and follow the posting rules of the forums.

I will now unlock this thread.

I’ve posted a few from time to time. Here’s a sampling of those I keep in my office.

That small black and white plastic looking set. Tell me, I must know. Is it magnetic? I need to know the name. As soon as I saw it I travelled 20 years back in time, which was the last time I saw it.

This one? Yes, it is magnetic. I’ve had it about twenty years. Don’t know a name other than magnetic chess set.

When I was in high school my dad had a portable set with pegs. He let me take it to school on those days when no instruction was occurring. His was in a plastic box with a plastic lid. I bought this set on eBay. It was missing a piece, so I bought a second one that had a broken box but all the pieces.

My biggest gripe about those tine magnetic or slotted travel kits is the quality of the pieces. When the king, queen, bishop, rook and pawns start to look like one another, I stop using them. That was my experience with the black-and-white magnetic travel chess set in the Ziryab's photo. I eventually gifted it to new chess players.

An old plastic set on a folding board, and two themed sets—one I think of as Montezuma and Cortes was a gift my in-laws picked up on their Panama Canal Cruise; the other celebrates a soft drink and was a gift from the elementary school principal where I taught chess fifteen years.

Yes! Does it have backgammon on the flip side??

This one doesn’t. The board is the box that holds the pieces. They are easy to lose.

Love things made out of wood, whether chess boards and pieces, tables, gun stocks, or the two reloading blocks I made this winter.

Also, the magnets are weak with that plastic travel chess set.
