gone for 2.000.£ whaouh! very good day for the buyer (see picture)

maybe because it was a 3.5 inch ?

Yup, when it comes to old chess sets size matters. Also, the Knights looked a little suspect to me - I know you expect a bit of variation, but - well have a look at the one on the left especially:

Could be camera distortion I suppose

Extremely excited!  I just picked up the Official Staunton/StauntonChessman Registered 1849 Jaque Cooke pieces and coffer.  https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/luxury-chess-pieces/products/1849-registered-complete-staunton-chess-pieces.  or here: https://stauntonchessmen.us/shop?olsPage=products%2Fnew-complete-1849-staunton-chessmen-set-save-as-a-set-pieces-case-with-brass-plaques-chessboard-with-case

I'll hope to upload pics  when it arrives.  The set truly looks beautiful and Stauntonchessmen.us treated me with incredible customer service.

This is my first considerable investment in a chess set and maybe it will satisfy any desire for another set.  Would love to get impressions from the sages who have haunted these forums for many years.

"Satisfy any desire for another set"? No, face facts - you're now a chess set addict like the rest of us here and you'll have to buy at least one set a year to satisfy the craving happy.png

I'm not a fan of reproductions, but that is a great looking set. I like the "Staunton" stamp on the king.

PS: Sorry but i really found the advertising photographies of the 1849 chess pieces not done good enough, so i will (try) to make good (comparatives) photographies (they will follows).

You cannot imagine the pleasure i have right now...

The chess pieces, (The Knights... The Knights!!!) look really better in real then from the advertising pictures.

Before any things:

I buy my chess pieces, i have nothing to do, and do not work for Official Staunton.
I am not a good customer of Official Staunton. ( 3 purchases included those marvellous chess pieces today... YES!!!)
Yes i have receive a gift from Carl : it was the great prize from a contest... in no way relative with my last purchase.

MySeTH,

This is wonderful to hear your initial impressions.  I too found this set through Official Staunton, and purchased it through stauntonchessmen.us because I'm based in the United States.  Would love to see the pics.  I too will plan to post pics when my order arrives.  The excitement of anticipation has grown 10-fold with your initial impressions,

@sargon530

Truth is: they are better then what you imagine...

MySeTH

of course, i do not know where are my glasses... but despite all, i have made pictures of the most remarkable, amazing Knights i ever saw even if you compare to an "Original" Jaques Knight...

Let me introduce what i think is the Spirit of Staunton...

(Forgive me if some (all?) are blurry... happy.png

...soon i have my glasses back, i will (try) to make others pictures of all the pieces seriously happy.png

surprise.png oops!

I still measured again and ... same muzzle size ... (the black color mistake me) ... sorry for that! Ah!  getting old...
I still find that black riders look more like the "Cook" Type 1, and whites like "Cook Type 2.

One thing is certain: they are absolutely perfect! Perfect!!!

Wow, beautiful.  Is that the board you'll pair it up with?

happy.png Thank you!

it is the only "new" chessboard i own, (from Official Staunton) but could be the one i prefer

... and with my new chess set, it is (to my eyes) really very beautiful.

If it may help...
My opinion about the official Staunton 1849 Registered Staunton chess pieces.

Maybe like some / many (?) of you, my first look in a chess set goes to the Knights.

(nb: it even happened one day that I bet on an auction of an incomplete game very damaged, only to have the knights, (wooden Jaques of 3.5 inch) ... I missed the sale, not enough money, they went to 750 €.

I do not regret anything because of my last acquisition (for about the same pricehappy.png) which is / may be, really my last purchase of "Staunton" chess pieces.

For a long time I had been looking for a set that would satisfy my desire of perfection, it is quite possible that today, my quest has ended.

The pieces are relatively large, rather slender, not too heavy, and an elegant form typically "Jaques". The base is wide, ensuring a perfect balance.

The colour of the black pieces is quite special because according to the light, they take a very light reddish reflection of the most beautiful effect ... I never noticed this on any of my ebony sets, really pretty, very elegant.

The white pieces have a colour reminiscent of ivory, slightly more yellow. they are very pleasant to watch.

What can i say more, this chess set is, to me, simply perfect.

One thing is certain: I am, in front of this chess set, "My" beautiful chess set, a happy man.
MySeTH

...as I found my glasses tongue.png

(PS: take a look at the "reddish" reflection on the black pawn)
