While I prefer jet-black pieces myself, I have seen some pretty nice red stains out there, which got me thinking; what kind of board woods should be paired with red stained pieces? The advantage to jet-black pieces is that they go with pretty much any non-jet-black square color; I’m not so sure about red. In addition to being unique in color, red stains come in different depths and shades (e.g., light red, bright red, deep/dark red), each needing to be treated differently. Deep/dark reds can probably be treated like jet-black, except for maybe the “redder” toned woods like mahogany. Lighter shades of red are more tricky; maybe something greyish like sapele? These are my amateur guesses/thoughts; tell me what you think!
