Very nice.  I have to say, I've been to North Bay a number of times over the years and never thought to go looking for a chess set.  Is (was) there a hobby store there?

I bought the pieces in North Bay back about 20 years ago. I have no idea what wood the black pieces are. Maybe Sheesham, maybe Blood Rosewood, maybe Rose Bloodwood, mayb Bud the Spudwood...

I do like the Lardy-esque bishops. I also like the way it looks on this somewhat crowded board, although this one is just a smidgeon tight even for me. (Which is far too crowded for many other people) I was given this folding board together with a set of really tiny wooden pieces about 30, 35 years ago, If anything, I would get a new folding wood board just a bit larger to handle the pieces.

Old thread - but hope this is of interest:
Came back to chess just over a year ago, and while I like my travel set and my full sized set, travel set is too wee (the board) and the full sided sets too big, over the last few weeks I have tried a few combinations but with my new board arriving yesterday this seems (for the moment) quite nice....
2.5 inch King set (non magnetic - important it is almost a copy of my best magnetic travel set which is quite old - I have posted pics before).
Combined with a 15.75 Inch Deluxe Black board.

15.75 inches is 40cm, but with nice border, the square size is only 1 and 9/16 inch which for some reason just looks better than the 1.5 inch squared board I was previously using without a border (shown for comparison).

Same set, and same board, but cropped by Grok....
