Duncan's writings have been invaluable resources on my collecting journey. His "Vintage Chess Sets of the United States" is often the first place I look for information whenever I find an old plastic set in an antique store or see one listed on an auction site. And it often contains the answer to the frequent "Can anyone identify this chess set?" forum questions. RIP, Duncan.

For those unfamiliar with Duncan's work, you can find a number of his documents uploaded (by Duncan himself) to Scribd, including pdf versions of Vintage Chess Sets of the United States, A History of the ES Lowe Company, and issues of Chess Collectors International - USA Edition, where he was an editor. I highly recommend those resources, available at

This set I saw today. The owner of a house I'm working on has this set. It's got piggies as the kights, lambs or sheep as the bishops (could be goats?), old out houses as the rooks, an old couple as the king and queen, and chickens as the pawns.
