(Fixed the images... they didn't come through the first time posting.)
Was gifted this interesting chess set with Chinese/Mandarin letterings and styles
Firstly,
It's a product made in China for Western consumers.
Chinese do not play Western Chess.
Chinese play Chinese Chess.
Secondly.
In the movie Blade, Frost uses a computer to Optical Character Recognize a glyph language.
That technology is real. I didn't think it was real. I thought it was movie make-believe, because English has only 26 glyphs x 2 for capitals.
After the movie Blade, I discovered that it was real.
Google Translate has it.
Just draw a glyph with a mouse, and the computer will put up the candidates, just like in the movie.
I OCR'ed the first glyph on the right by drawing in Google Translate.

It can be done. You can do it.
The Chinese characters on the packaging box are from an ancient Chinese text. The entire book contains only 524 characters and is a classic work on self-cultivation and managing family affairs in ancient China. It includes teachings on respecting teachers and elders, practicing thrift and frugality in household management, living harmoniously with neighbors, among other things
A few months ago, I told some family members that I believed Ding Liren would win the World Championship. (My mother-in-law loves going to rummage and estate sales.) Today at lunch, they presented me with this beautiful chess set. Does anyone know anything about it? There are no markings other than what I show in the pictures, and the only "text" is in Chinese/Mandarin. I also found it interesting that on the cover of the box it showed a group of women playing chess.
I've got more pictures, but if anyone knows anything about this chess set, it would be interesting to learn. I tried to google translate some of the Chinese characters, but the most I figured out was a "glorious concubine" or something.
