I have a chess tournament in January and I'm wondering what is a good book to learn from in order to prepare?

You could look at RussBell's list. Google it.
Otherwise you'll need to specify more info, like what is your Elo or BCF rating.

Yup! That's the one.

Russ, are you planning to add to this list? Your list is one of the top hits on a google search for best chess books so it's going to get a lot of views. I was thinking it would be good to have a really comprehensive list (but obviously it would still be incomplete!) of books together with estimated rating ranges and links to reviews. Such a thing would be a project, maybe a new forum topic, with your list as the starting point.

@IpswichMatt -

Thanks for the suggestion.  However, I have many other projects, in addition to my Chess.com activities, that collectively take up a lot of my time.   I have neither the time nor inclination to add to my "to do" list!
