Will The Real Fischer-Spassky 1972 Design Please Stand Up?

I like to think that the 1972 set was a variation oh the Havana 1966 Olympiad set. On this Olympiad Fisher and Spasky played with a draw score, so they went for a similar setting to solve the draw ones and for all.
They are beautiful pieces D2 - thanks for posting.
HT - I think that was the very reason why they had that particular chess table made for the world championship, to be modelled off the Havana Olympiad.

But you yourself posted a link to an identical 1960s Jaques set; it wasn't modelled on the Havana set, it was clearly a development of 1940s Jaques sets.

That's exactly the plan we are attempting to do with this marble chess board we obtained recently from a local thrift shop. When done someday I'll post better photos of the pieces on the board. When the inset is done on the marble board the "frame" will be covered by a wood molding.
It will look incredible D2! You might even start a trend on here...
I was thinking of trying to do something like that myself but I found that marble is expensive if not bought from thrift and it's hard to get very large squares (as used in Havana or 1972). Plus most marble is rather glossy. I look forward to seeing how it turns out and I might do the same in a few years.

At some point I considered to make a table like this but I just don't have the room for it. Anyway, if it worth something, on my plans I was planing for the box to store the pieces to use a cigar box, this is an idea I pick from Alan, this cigar boxes come whit humidifier so your set will last you longer. Also the cigar theme goes just fine with the Havana theme.

One thing I don't understand - if you want a Fischer v Spassky set, why not buy directly from Jaques? That is surely as authentic as it gets!
Not really. Jaques doesn't manufacture sets anymore, they resell Indian-made replicas of their own old designs and just slap their label on. So in that sense, Jaques sets aren't any more "authentic" than HoS replicas. In most instances, they're all made by the same workshop(s) in Amritsar.

The 72 Jaques set is an evolution of previous Jaques sets (look at 1940s Jaques sets, and look at the Jaques set from the 1960s shown on the Dorland site). I don't see any similarity to the Havana set at all. Nor is there any factual evidence supporting your hypothesis that I'm aware of.

By the time of the 72 match Fischer already seemed to favor the dubrovnik pieces , so I find it surprising that he didnt want to play that match with a dubrovnik set . As for Spassky I don't think he cared what set they played on as long as they played .

Exactly and ditto.

We've always wondered about that as well.
Question
Does anyone know what size the squares were on the green & white board ? Assuming, and could be wrong, that the actual pieces were 3.5's and either the squares were 2 to 2 1/4. Also does anyone know of a clear flat spray that can be used on marble?

Well, he could have asked for a Dubrovnik but didn’t, so clearly the exact style of the set just wasn’t important to him.

Am I the only one who have this feeling that D2_To_D8 is ROBB?
Like my grandfather always says, an apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Anyway, getting back on to chess, can someone confirm the actual size of the board squares of the original board (s) ? It would be helpful before our board project gets to far along. Also, there is some confusion about that of the wood board versus marble board as we've seen both in various pictures of the table top inserts. Considering the possibility of inserting both boards into a single desk type table.

On page one the Knights are ours, HOS photo is from a 2012 set, and the 1st was one of the actual Jaques from 1972.
You can look at these links of current sets available from HOS and Jaques of London in America to compare. Either set is about as good a remake as you'll get at the current time. I just prefered the HOS knights at the time when it was purchased.
