-I currently am tutoring a student in chess for about one and a half years. When he started chess, he was a 900 USCF rated player. But within one year, he went up over 200 USCF rating points near 1200 USCF rating. He had some victories against a couple of 1400 players, and a victory against a 1600 player.

Hi sritinku, I can definitely teach you how to play chess. I see that you are from India. I am from the United States. I teach you online through Zoom. I would like to talk to you on the phone about the how I am going to teach you and the payment. My cellphone # is 610-812-5433. I am looking forward to talking to you.

Hi samob917, that's great that you want to get better at chess. But unfortunely I do require some sort of monetary payment. I started chess when I was 12 years old and I became a very high Class A player now. Maybe we can work something out. Talk to your parents about this. I would like to talk to you and your parents about this as well if you are still interested in me tutoring you. We can discuss tutoring and the payment. My cellphone # is 610-812-5433.

Also samob917, I have one question for you. Where in the United States do you live? I live in Norristown, PA.

$35 / hour? Isn that about what NMs and FMs charge? at 1900 USCF I doubt you will find many people willing to pay that.

martellochesscoach

Well AlexDyer, Dan Hesiman charges $85/hour ($65/hour for 60+ year olds) and he is a NM. Most NMs and FMs would charge $100+/hour. Honestly, $35/hour is a fair price for tutoring. That's what I charge for math, science, and chess tutor. By the way, VaristyTutors charge $50/hour (or even more) for tutoring students. I have currently been tutoring a 1000-1200 USCF player (60-something year old man) for about 1.5 years now. When he started with me, he was about a 900 USCF player, within one year, I helped him raise his USCF over 200 points where he got his rating as high as 1175. He even made some upsets where he beat a couple of 1400s and a 1600 players.

First of all - Dan Heisman is one of the most well known chess instructors on the planet, having authored many books and having taught for decades. The amount he charges is not at all representative of NM's - if you look at most NM / CM coaches on this site they charge around $25-$35. You claim most NM's and FM's charge $100 + per hour - you do know how ridiculous that is, right? Working full time at $100 / hour would net you north of $200k per year, about what most doctors make. The only coaches who charge that much are 2600+ GM's.

Also - coaching a player from 900 strength to 1150 in 1.5 years is nothing to brag about. I improved from 900 to 1150 USCF in about 3 months when I was 8, without ever studying - just playing. With coaching for that long, he should be able to improve to at least 1500, if not more.

I'm sorry I'm being so harsh, but people should know that there are significantly higher rated players with much more coaching expeerience who charge a lot less than you. Based on your ratings on this site, I'm about the same strength as you, and I would never in a million years compare myself to NMs or FMs since I know I'm no where near that level.

martellochesscoach

Ok, I get it AlexDyer. I never compared my chess strength to their chess strength. I understand that they know more than me and that they are better than me. I only research a few chess NM, FM, IM, etc and I saw their prices and I did my tutoring at a lower price than them. I didn't mean to compare prices with NM, FM, IM, etc. I apologize for that. I'm just doing my own chess service what I think is reasonably fair.

Vik1500

i also want to learn but dont want to pay lol ,anyone (1000 to 1500 rating) who are willing to improve, can only work on tactics and play a lot so they can easily improve free of cost hehe.

When teaching beginners, the ability to explain things clearly is much more important than being a professional-strength chess player.

It goes hand in hand. You need the correct concepts clearly explained. A 1900 rated player will teach you different concepts than a titled player. Some of them will be incorrect. Then you have to spend time and money to unlearn what you've learned, and under pressure situations, you may fall back on the old concepts. It's not worth the risk.

Always rely on titled players for lessons. This is their credentials, all teachers need them.

NMs typically charge around 30$ i think
