I am almost 50-years-old and was a novice player pretty much my whole life. In the last 10 years, I have seen my rating go from around 1500 to around 1900. I have always had a decent ability to calculate, but I think the thing that helped my game the most was not relying on early a6 and h6 or a3 and h3 as white to prevent pins on knights. I'm actually surprised that there are still players rated close to 2000 still lean on these pawn moves in the opening and neglect development.
