Both 2...Nf6 and 2...d5 are fine against the Alapin, and some players may also like 2...e6 or 2...g6.

For me, 2...g6 is good.

I dislike Sicilian defence

I_Am_Arthur_Dent_42
i used sicilian defence for a while and won 1:3 ratio

There's nothing wrong with that as long as 1/3 of your games were draws wink.png

Here's another 3 minute no increment blitz game that I played a couple minutes ago where I transposed from a French Defense into an Alapin. Notice, like with all Alapin games, how white's control of the center and superior piece development is what wins the game

2. c3 equalizes for black, as Uri65 notes above. As a Sicilian player, I am prepared against it.

Is staples13 actually trying to beat stockfish?

What am I doing with my life, I just read this whole thread surprise.png

I really was on the edge of my seat, wondering if this is a troll post or not but unfortunatly

"Admittedly I couldn’t figure out how to download stockfish so I had to guess as to what moves stockfish would have played, but I think I probably got it right"

gave it away sad.png

Btw, 7. ...dxe5 might be more challenging than Nb6. Stockfish initially thinks that 8.Bxd5 is a problem, but after some time realizes that the black queen sits comfortably on d6 after 8. ...Qxd5 Nc3. Although going for 7. ...Nb6 8. Bb3 dxe5 9. d5 Na5, where black might even hope for a sizeable advantage, at least with engine assistance, is propably the best try vs staples13 grin.png

This is not a troll thread. It has been a legitimate analysis of the merits of playing the Alapin against the Sicilian Defense, my inability to download stockfish notwithstanding.

Anyhow I’m glad you read the whole thing. Hope you learned something from it. I certainly have!

Don't you realize c3 violates "Basic Opening Principles"? So, if we're looking on a principle basis, c3? is also bad. c3 tries to control the center, c5 tries to control the center. c3 doesn't develop a piece, c5 doesn't develop a piece. So...

HorribleTomato

I'm trying to explain it to staples13 in the language of 1100s!

staples13

Well I appreciate you trying to make your argument as simple as possible for my sake but I’m  rated several hundred points higher than you, so the more complex version is just fine too
