The Hippo! Go with exotic ;)

I've heard of that one, the hippo is a good one exept for i dont know how to follow it up.

Yeah - it's a high level opening. The formation can be broken since it takes so long to form and I'm not knowledgable enough to know how to proceed if that happens. I've seen some games where the hippo is allowed to form, so I'm decent at that.

The Hippo looks very weak to me.  It's horribly passive and both the kingside and the quenside have weakened pawn structures, making king protection a big concern later in the game.  Black seems to have pretty limited options.  His piece mobility is horible.  The only safe squares for the knights are their starting squares and the bishops, even though fianchettoed, are pretty boxed in.

ive tried this one, didnt even know it had a name; anyway, has a tendency to leave too many holes that white could occupy. not only that, you can castle, but it wont do much good youve advanced the pawns that usually give your king a protective barrier. i dont know, it starts good, but can end badly i think, plus all the pieces you need to get out front are still behind the pawns. id have to keep tryiing it, but like i said too many holes so i just avoid this one, if someone figures it out, let me know.

Whoa, whoa! Calm down my friend. Besides the fact that there have actually been serious books writen on this opening, "The Hippopotamus Rises" by IM Andrew Martin, for example, it has also been played legitimately by Gerard Welling. Genrikh Chepukaitis played it a lot, although he calls it the Scorpion (as do most Easter European players. An example (where he wins): http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1315119

I'm certainly not going to accept being shamed for posting an unusual opening "on the internet" *gasp!*, especially when I was being entirely tongue in cheek about it.

Filo01, I was just punching it out quickly and wasn't really following anything for white. Take a look at the game in the link above for an accurate description of how the hippo is supposed to develop.

We should note that the game he won with the Hippo Defence was a blitz game.

This is how I heard about the hippo.

I don't really get the pwnzor. it Fry's the knights. there is a pawn sacrifice on move 4.bishop takes b5. and I don't know why the white king would get out so early on 7.ke2 and then go out even further I don't think many people like to get there king out that early. Then there is always the nice and easy Sicilian, the hippo and the najdorf thanks for the ideas.

I have all sorts of good openings for Black, play most of them, Sicilian, Ruy Lopez, French, Scandinavian, Queens Gambit, Slav, Nimzo, KID, etc.  Can you tighten up the question some?
olram30
i'm also looking for a solid opening for black, but i guess i'm just gonna play alot more as black and refine the ones i know. practice..
