Accelerated Dragon 7. Bc4 ? Am I missing something?

I'm new to Sicilians (1.d4 player). Why is Bc4 the recommended move here?

How is 7...Na5 not good for black? Bringing the bishop back to e2 looks terrible. Why is this the number one recommended move? I considered trading knights first but that just doesn't feel right to me for some reason. There's no way I'm playing Bc4 even if it is recommended.

It seems like 8.Bxf7 check is good.

You can use an engine to find out why for that.

I don't understand why you think 8.Be2 is terrible.

Thanks for responding.

I can't use an engine because one of my correspondence games are in this position. But it's still very much theory so I'm allowed to pose purely theoretical questions and look up positions.

I guess after Be2 their knight is somewhat misplaced. Funny, in the database black scores well against 8. Be2 and I couldn't find the bishop sac on f7 though I will analyze it after the game.

If this is an ongoing game, youre not allowed to discuss it, as it is considered cheating.

The main reason for playing Bc4 is to try and head for a Yugoslav attack without letting Black get d5 in . If Black manages that then he's a whole tempo up on a mainline Dragon as he's not had to play 2. ...d6 first. Hence Bc4 rather than playing for Qd2, f3, 0-0-0 which is just dead equal as it allows d5 liquidating.

As others have said - seeking advice about an ongoing game is borderlien at best on here.

It's theory. If you play the Sicilian you must've seen this position a thousand times. Theoretical questions and analyzation are allowed provided it's not unique to one's game. I'm like, what, seven moves in? Might as well shut down all talk of Sicilians for anyone with correspondence games ongoing.

Twenty moves deep - even if it is theory - now that would pushing it.

LosingAndLearning81

Exactly. But I don't even see it as borderline. Not seven moves in. This is a Sicilian we're talking about. Seven moves in a Sicilian is not unique to anyone's game. Might as well shut down all theoretical talk for those with ongoing correspondence games if seven moves in a Sicilian is considered off-limits. What's next? Can't talk d4 openings if you have games where 1. d4 is on the board? You have to draw the line somewhere.

In any case the game is beyond that point. I ended up going with the move recommended by Chess.com. Probably would've played the sac had it not been suggested on this thread but that's my fault.

I have a lot to learn about Sicilians.

Look up the Yugoslav Attack and the Fischer-Sozin Attack. Both of those lines demonstrate why Na5?? is bad, and the purpose of Bc4.

Yugoslav Attack doesn't work against the Accelerated Dragon.  Only the regular dragon!

Dragon:  1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 Nc6 8.Qd2 O-O 9.Bc4 and you have a game.

Accelerated Dragon:  1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Bc4 O-O 8.f3? Qb6! (8...d6 would transpose to the Dragon) 9.Bb3 Nxe4! with advantage to Black.

The lines with f3 in the Accelerated Dragon are known as the "Weekend Variation" because many amateurs play it all the time at weekend tournaments.  The line is simply put, bad!

9.Bb3 Nxe4 is just dead equal after 10.Nd5. I think that 9...Ng4!? is a much better try for an advantage.

Instead of 8.f3?! the move 8.Bb3 is much better. I don't like Uogele's 8...a5 very much, but Black has a few good alternatives, like 8...d6, 8...Nxd4, 8...d5!? and 8...a6!? - but I guess the most solid one is 8...Re8!? intending to shoot ...d7-d5 in one go.
