Best Chess Openings

These are what I think are the best chess openings. I will split this up into two sections.

Top three defenses for Black:

#3: Bogo-Indian Defense

The Bogo is extremely annoying for White, therefore earning the 3rd spot.

#2: Nimzo-Indian Defense

The Nimzo was the first Indian Defense to be recognized. It is still played today by many top GMs.

#1: Sicilian Defense

The most popular and best scoring opening for black against the tactical e4 allows the Sicilian Defense to take the top spot.

The best opening for white:

The Scotch Game!!!!!

This is no doubt the greatest tool to avoid the Ruy.

Why avoid the Ruy Lopez? It allows white to maintain a small advantage.

Avatar of kco

maybe is best so to avoid a lots of the theory.

Avatar of Darkrai88

Most Ruy players playing black know loads of opening theory. In the opening, it is a battle of better memorization of lines and who knows more theory

Avatar of benedictus

I know next to nothing in Ruy theory and I tend to do ok with both sides.

Some Ruy players play the annoying draw-out games like the Kasparov Kramnik game below

you play at the GM level Dark ?

I dont think this game is one of those "annoying draw out games". it was rather instructive during the endgame.

True, but it shows how hard it is to get an advantage against experienced Ruy players.

It shows how hard it is to get an advantage against Kramnik, anyway.

Kramnik was playing Kasparov though.

Avatar of Mach491

both players are equally reponsible if the position is ruy. its was as much white's choice as it was black's. so if u r white and dont wanna play ruy, u wont have to.  unlike french or sicilian or caro-kann.

It is a matter of taste! You have just posted your own opening repertoire.

Like Alekhine said, any opening is good enough, provided it's reputation is bad enough.

Yes. I agree with you vill0236. He has probarbly pasted his own repertoire. As Black I like the french and the modern/old Benoni. As white I like the open sicilian Giacco piano and for the scandivian(center counter defence) 1. e4 d5  the move I like most is 2.Nc3

Only a weak player would label best and worst openings

Agree. Different types of openings with good, i.e. positional play, can help  advance ya skills.

Avatar of upen2002

any opeaning that has a bad refutation is good

I like the Queen's gambit accepted as White, and the Ruy as Black.
