stwils original post suggests the exchange variation (4. BXN) as a way to answer 3.... a3 in the Lopez, and this is indeed a way to avoid its more torturously complex lines. Its strategy is not too difficult to understand--an early queen exchange, a kingside pawn majority, playing for exchanges to reach the endgame and playing to create a passed pawn in the endgame. This is exactly what I used to play until I decided to study the more difficult 4. Ba4 lines.
