What is a simple to learn black opening in response to e4?

I gotta disagree with Petroff, man. No offense.

Its not a natural opening for OPs level. And if you keep mirroring your opponent in Petroff this is gonna happen sooner or later.

You are likely to see 4/5 common responses from white if you play e4. You can play Nc6 against both Vienna game and Nf3. If d4 happens, just take the pawn. Center game is nothing to be afraid of. Well I am sure you already know how to stop Scholars Mate attempt.

Play the hyperaccelerated dragon for a fun game.

Here's a simple plan:

e5-Nc6-Bc5, this can be played against most things although sometimes there are better responses.

You can also try this simple Sicilian Dragon setup.

You can basically play c5-Nc6-g6-Bg7 against most things and control the dark squares, except for the Alapin (2. c3) where you play either Nf6 or d5.

When black pushes the c-pawn in the Caro-Kann, it usually ends up like a French Advance but black is down a tempo. A more interesting opening for black is the Hyperaccelerated Dragon Sicilian or the Pirc, neither of which lower-rated players will have prepared for. There are great free courses on both at Chessable.
