a3 is a bad opening unless you are Magnus Carlsen playing white in a vary fast game of chess.

I’m pretty sure the idea behind it is to move second (so you’re basically playing black) with the assumption that a3 will be useful later in the game

idk I’ve never actually played 1. a3 before

Many optimistic chess-players will realize that 1.a3 is a true chess opening. Chess is more than just "following all of the opening principles", or playing exactly how a computer tells you to. Chess is a game. All of these humans that enjoy playing this game in particular, have 1 problem:

They treat this game like a competition.

They spend their time studying books from strong Grandmasters, or looking at engine evaluations. Chess is supposed to be-played for fun! Isn't that what the game is all about?

1.a3 simply takes coverage of all the possible needs during a game of chess.

Lets start with the simple openings. 1.a3 could lead to the Ruy Lopez, the Italian Game, the Queens Gambit, and pretty much all of the possible openings! You can simply start your game off with a3, and then convert it into whatever position you want! Pretty cool right?

If you need proof, of 1.a3 converting into other openings, feel free to challenge me to an unrated daily game! (I play as white)

Chess is a competetive sport. It is fun, but its a serious sport like any other. So stop if you can't understand those things, if you don't want  to improve and just play for fun, do it, no one cares. But stop saying that "Chess is just a game."

Dang bruh there is a difference between playing chess carefree, with pressure, and without even caring about the game. You evidently don't understand what he means by "chess is just a game." People who don't care to improve wouldn't be playing chess at all (or maybe trolling) because everyone wants to improve. Ofc it is a competitive sport but you don't have the right to rule out what someone else says because of your own opinion.

1 a3 is a clever attempt at wrongfooting black into a structure, or specific piece placement, or opening that he doesn't play. however, in order to do that you have to be well-versed in many different structures and piece placement yourself. i doubt that would be the case with players below 2000 playing strength. so in order to really make 1 a3 work you'd have to be very strong and universally well-versed, or you'll just end up losing horrible games because you couldn't get much out of the nuance that a3 brings to the position.

so to me 1 a3 only becomes fun if you are already very strong and very versatile in your play, but at that point it is not very likely that someone would go for 1 a3.

that said, it may be a good way to fight against your opening with colors reversed if you ever get it, trying to make something of a3.

IT IS NOT THE BEST OPENING. ALL MOVES [EXCEPT MAYBE 1. g4] FROM THE OPENING POSITION DRAW.
