I failed to play the English opening I've been playing e4 in 99% of my games and I have no problem with it if e4 bores you d4 could work.

Good Combination = Queen& Rook or Queen & Bishop! Queen is actually good with anything

Elizabeth, you mean to say an opening that starts by using the sides. Combinations are tactics or a series of them designed to gain an advantage like winning material or checkmate. As far as openings from the side you could experiment with the kings Indian attack, kings Indian defense, etc. There are many more, they're referred to as hypermodern openings.
