89.4% in the Englund/Hartlaub-Charlick Gambit.
Showing that White has to be very careful, and Black often has plenty of good chances with early piece development, in an open game that started 1.d4

What I don't understand is why any White player would commit to exd6 on move 3, when 3.Nf3 followed by 4.Bg5 basically denies any of the d-file shenaniganz altogether
Sure, a lot of Black's tricks are gone, and his speedy development is slowed, but the likely continuation:

Sure it is a position and below master level a lot can happen
: But is is a pawn down without any comp really, so I would frankly never consider going for it when there are plenty of other openings which offer similar positions without being a pawn down. maybe playing with e3 is even safer for White here (the temporary intiative is neutralized quickly)
Agreed - my point was, it's almost always going to be a far better option than the standard Englund Gambit!
Plus, hardly anyone much below 1800 is going to find or prep the best Engine line, which leaves White around +1.25 up, because the gambit is much rarer even than the Englund, at intermediate level.
This game I just finished was fun! I'm glad White also entered in to the spirit of things with the Greek Gift attempt ![]()
79.2% accuracy, so nothing that special on my part.
englund gambit is dumb opening
If you study what to do against it (as well as me)
you are completely chill with no troubles also you can see how bad is it according to chess engine:

...Yet they keep on playing 3.exd6.
Stockfish thinks White still has plenty of compensation, and scores the position after the capture as +1.22, however, in practical terms it's already going to mean a tough game for White to cash-in on any so-called advantage.
Here's another brutal battering. By move 13 White is already completely lost.

If I were you I would check the late Danya's (Naroditsky) video on beating the englund. Its an excellent video which covers the main line, f6 and d6
