f5 opening

I have been opening with 1.f5. The results have been +ve mostly at my level in bullet. I am sure that skilled players don't use this opening for good reason. What am I missing? Thanks,

Well, I managed to find one game out of your last ten or so bullet games where you opened with 1.f4.

But none with 1...f5.

If you're talking about Bird's opening (1.f4), skilled players do use it. It's got a fair reputation as a sound opening.

It's just another wing opening. You can transpose into the King's Gambit depending on black's reply.

The "From Gambit" is a common defense when black will reply 1...e5 to attack your f4 pawn.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it should read 1. f4 and not 1.f5 . With 1. f4 e5, I use 2. f4xe5 or 2.e4 opening up the c1 bishop. The most common issue I face with this opening is a very weak e4 square. Usually my pawn structure will be f4, e3, d4, c4. This is in response to black's 1.f4 d5 2. c4 nf6 3. nc3 e5. 4. e3. I am wondering how to use this opening and defend the e4 square. (Thx for the name of the opening-Bird's opening)

Sure thing. I find it interesting. I played a game after you posted with 1.f4 to see if it would help spark any ideas for you.

Opponent resigned on move 14.

e4 was adequately covered.

in my opinion, for what it's worth, f4 is a weak opening. the from gambit pretty much takes care of business.

Interesting. Thx! How would you respond to - 1.f4 d5? Usually I play 2. d4 3. c4. 3. nc3 with the intention of attacking d5 and developing nc3. Black in these cases attack e4 with nf6 and Bf5 and after Bf5, e6.

pdve - I think so too. There seems to something fundamentally suspicious in opening up the king side before any development. MelvinDoucet - Thx. for the system. But e4 remains weak. And with Bf5 and Nf6 (or, even Pf5???

), it's in black's control.

Thx MelvinDoucet. I'll try that next time. The worry I have in your suggestion is the black d pawn push d5-d4. But it does sound interesting. Let's see what shapes it takes in games.
