I have no problems with openings with white but I need a few with black. I would like something open and yet solid ( when I say solid, I mean not too agressive for white) for me to counter 1.e4. thanks .

The best opening move for black following white moving e4 is c5 . An international master told me that when I asked what the best response was for black.

I like the french and caro. French is a lot easier to learn but caro gives your bishop space

Scandinavian, but be careful with this one because sometimes you can overdo it and get yourself into a really bad position.
Otherwise it’s pretty good and many players have used it including Hikaru, a very famous chess streamer and player.

Hi! If you want an open game then you should meet 1.e4 with 1...e5. Solid options are Giuco Piano against Italian Game and Berlin variation against Spanish Game.

But do not confuse solid with uncomplicated! The opponent can always go for complications no matter the opening you chose. The good thing is that if your position is solid, it can better resist attacks and provide counterplay opportunites. You have tobe always prepared for complications.

If you are interested in building an opening repertoire, you could check out my blog: https://www.chess.com/blog/maafernan/openings-for-beginners

Good luck!
