I'm wondering what to play against d4, as the Abort Defense usually doesn't work after a few games.

As Black, what do you guys play against this?

E5 or E6 French Defence or Englund Gambit or F5 Dutch Defence

Looks like OP plays the Banned For Fair Play Violation Defense.

This isn't how chess works.

I agree or it could turn into "The Queen's Gambit"

That doesn't make any sense.

If white opens d4, black can't play d4, that's impossible for many reasons.

There are five good defenses against 1 d4.

  • 1 d4 d5 2 c4 dxc4
  • 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6
  • 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6
  • 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6
  • 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6

Check out the Tartakower Defense - it is simple to learn and very universal (works against everything except 1.e4)

1.d4 e6 is bot the French Defense unless White plays an early e4, like 1.d4 e6 2.e4 or 1.d4 e6 2.Nc3 Bb4 3.e4.

  • 1 d4 d5 2 c4 dxc4
  • 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6
  • 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6
  • 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6
  • 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6

There are others, and these lead to multiple defenses - two moves does not classify an opening.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 can lead to a QGD, Queen's Indian, Nimzo-Indian, Catalan, Modern Benoni, etc

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 can lead to both the Kings Indian and Grunfeld.

1 d4 d5 2.c4 c6 can lead to the Slav or Semi-Slav.

1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 can lead to the QGD, Semi-Slav, Catalan, etc.

And then also left out, but sound, is the Dutch Defense (1.d4 f5 or 1.d4 e6 followed by 2...f5)

To answer the OP's question, a lot depends on what you play against 1.e4. There are stylistic differences between the main 4 defenses to 1.e4. If you play one of them, see below. If you play some knock off defense, like the Alekhine, can't help you.

I would suggest the following:

If you play 1...e5, then you are clearly accustomed to diverse pawn structures, from closed like in the Ruy Lopez to wide open like in the Scotch or King's Gambit. I suggest the Nimzo-Indian for you.

If you play 1...e6, you are mostly dealing with open (Exchange and Tarrasch) and closed (Advance and Winawer) structures. Not static, mobile, or dynamic. I would suggest the classical or Stonewall Dutch via 1...e6

If you play 1...c5, clearly you prefer more dynamic, asymmetrical pawn structures, and would, depending on which line of the Sicilian you play and whether it winds up more open or more closed, go for either the Kings Indian or Grunfeld.

If you play 1...c6 against 1.e4, you are typically looking for calmer waters, a safe king, and are willing to grind it out for the win. I would suggest either the QGD or Slav.

I play 1. c6, thank you so much for the help! QGD doesn’t sound great to me but I actually love the Slav. I am going to learn 1. c5 theory in a bit and the King’s Indian and Grunfeld sound super good to me. Thanks again for all the help.

If you consider time investment there's no way around the the QGD or QGA

1. Nf6

Usually, I then follow it up with a NID, QID, or Bogo-Indian setup - most of the time with a pawn on d6, rather than on d5.
