Here boris Avrukh writes that white's immediate threat is Rd1. Why is Rd1 a threat? Couldn't black just play Nec7 and then e7-e6?

As Rd1 threatens the knight it is a threat. It does'nt need to win material to be called a threat.

I see that white can threaten the knight with multiple pieces after Rd1 with Nb1-c3 and Nf3-xx. The knight is pinned to the queen, so it looks unpleasant.

Black just doesn't want to do that; it's very passive and e6 creates weaknesses on d6 and f6.
