Discussion kind of explains why I ebay'd my avrukh gruenfeld vol 1 and 2. After examining the books He convinced me Black has a better game and I really was never able to find a good opening line for white. He proved black better in all lines.

Are you sure you ordered Avrukh's books and not some crates of Cutty Sark?

There is a best games book for Gelfand, where quite a few games are in the exchange var with Rb1.

At the moment black is in good theoretical shape in Grunfeld with backing of highly computerised lines. These positions are not so easy to play though especially for club players who don't have calculating skills\memory of top GMs. Not so long ago even Kasparov was in trouble in many Grunfeld games in matches with Karpov.

There is also the new Kaufmann repertoire book for Black and White, which advocates the Grunfeld for Black against 1.d4.

These are the good news. The bad news are that the book if of very poor quality- only a fool, or a total newbie would take Kaufmann's recommendations seriously.

Blindside- Avrukh refuted the line he gave in the g3 Grunfeld in his book on the Grunfeld.

What line is being talking about now, I thought Avrukh recommended the solid c6 and d5 approach against g3 in his Grunfled book?

In the more dynamic neo-grunfeld with immediate d5, in diagram above, FIDE 2700's are more often playing Nb6, followed by Nc6, rather than c5. This line is recommended by Delchev in "Safest Grunfeld". Think his book has a lot more helpful explanations for club players than the heavy duty Avrukh ones. Avrukh ones very good but probably need to be FIDE 2200+ to get proper benfict from them, or play mostly correspondence chess.

If meant the Qb3 approach against c6, d5, find it highly unlikely black will find anything to be winning. If that somehow true, white can return to c4xd5, followed by Ne5 more standard approach that Karpov used against Kasparov in their matches. Good luck black finding any refutations there...

pfren deserves a nomination for best opening advice:

If you are of the level to bother about finesses deep into the opening, then sit down and do some work of your own- you should not expect everything served on a plate!

Which line did you settle with against the Grunfeld?

I didn't settle with anything. Part of getting better at chess is to be willing to experiment with different stuff.

i think the most testing lines are the lines in the brinckmann variation

ah yes, the russian variation

most beginners /intermediates who like the grunfeld have only learned the exchange. playing anything else gives an easy win

and its not even like the others variations are bad

I don’t understand all the noise because white is generally easier to play in the Grunfeld?

yeah but black has so much counterplay and different ways to play depending what variation you play
