Slightly better for white

bad, in terms of "there were better moves"

Exposes the king. How is that good?

Yeah! Hear that IM pfren, who cares about being an International master, some 1200 rated troll from the internet thinks your wrong so it must be true.

I don't open discussions with obvious trolls. Why should I make an exception for your highness?

You replied to a commenter some while ago that you have annotated games on li**ch.org that they can learn from. I forgot the exact thread. I sent you a pm asking what your username is. The intention was to view your games there and learn from them. But you didn't reply. I am not a troll. Beating your fist against your chess and accusing people of being a troll acomplishes nothing. I am a good person.

TinkleDink

Yeah, your not a troll. But you are a 1200 rated patzer who just called an IMs opinion on an opening wrong.

Well, based on your ratings, I am sure you are a patzer too. I happen to look up to pfren.

Then don't disagree with him about something you clearly know nothing about at your level

definineitly f4 because if they try to play the froms gambit 1...e5, then you hit them with e4, transposing into the king's gambit, triggering your opponent.

But what if they wanted you to enter a KG? Then it's white who got played

ThrillerFan

1.b4 - have played it about 250 times over the board.  Even drew 2200 and 2300 players with it at the 2014 US Open and drew a 2200 at the 2008 IS Open with wins against 2 1800s and a 2100.

Was my main White weapon on 2008, 2009, and 2014.  Now, I play it maybe once or twice a year over the board.

nescitus

Of these two moves,1.f4 ofers a choice of viable setups (reversed Classical Dutch, reversed Leningrad Dutch, Stonewall, early b3 stuff and even early b4 against some move orders. After 1.b4, it is Black who has a lot of sensible choices on moves 2 and 3. So it's 1.f4 for me.

no i love playing agaisnt KG

see that's exactly what I mean! From players like to play against the KG.

Deranged

I love playing the King's Gambit. So I'd choose f4 and pray that my opponent plays the From Gambit against me (1... e5?!) so that I can play 2. e4 and transpose to a KG.

sndeww

I'm perfectly fine with accepting the from's despite the fact that I don't score well against it.

1. b4 for sure unless you like to get mated a lot vs players better than you. I don't understand why people play French at all for this reason. As white vs French I just get to mate the king about 10x as often as facing other black openings. Why do they torment themselves?

sndeww

I'm gonna wait for @Thrillerfan to go ham on that comment

sndeww

I think I mate more when I have mate in one

i think i mate against the russian ,sicilian, modern pirc, modern defence, pirc defence, owen defence more often

what's the russian lol

I don't understand how white is able to mate black quickly in such a drawish pawn structure tho

darkunorthodox88

i much rather play 1.b4. its much more flexible in pawn structure and you almost always get a nagging space advantage on black's queenside.  They are also more tricks than with 1.f4 which is more of an equalizing move with a specific flair.

i also play 1.b3 and sometimes, i get to transpose to 1..f4 lines, but i only do so sparingly since im never entirely comfortable with the structure.  i always feel the queen knight struggles to find an adequate square, and there is always this nagging d5-d4 threat through half of the middlegame. Even the exciting attacking lines with bd3 , black is just better provided he knows how to avoid the early attack.
