Is the grunfeld sound?

I think so

Then why are you asking, other than to troll?

On the off chance that this isn't a trolling thread, obviously it is sound.  In fact, GMs at the top level would rather play 1.c4 or take on the Berlin endgame instead of playing against the Grunfeld these days.  Funny how people thought 1.e4 was dying, when in fact it seems that the Grunfeld is slowly strangling 1.d4.  Good thing for us mortals who aren't super GMs that none of this really matters.

"the Grunfeld is slowly strangling 1.d4" -- well now you've ensured this is a trolling thread.

Explain? My point has to do with 2700+ players, which is why I said none of it really matters.

I would say the Grunfeld is one of the main 4 defenses used against 1.d4.

However, I do not believe the Grunfeld percentages have came close to the Sicilian percentages.

I think the only line which has came close to those percentages has been the Nimzo-Indian Defence.

However, white can avoid playing the NID.

I think the King Pawn Game lines can be comparable to the Queens Gambit Decline lines.

I think the Caro-Kann could be compared to the Slav and Semi Slav

I think the Sicilian Defence 2...d6 lines would be comparable to the NID

I think the Sicilian Defence 2...e6 lines would be comparable to the QID

I guess the French Defense or Pirc Defence would be compare to the Grunfeld

So when I play the siclilian line that I like I have the chances of the queens Indian

Well it depends on which Sicilian line you like.

If you like the 2...e6 lines like the Sicilian Kan than yeah you might like the Queens Indian Defence.

Those lines are often more positional in nature more piece moving.

If you like the Sicilan Dragon or Najdorf lines than you will probably like the Grunfeld.

Those lines are often more attacking in nature more piece pressure.

I really do not believe d4 players are concerned about the grunfeld. Their main annoyance seems to be the nimzo indian really. The grunfeld is considered good, but white does get an advantage agaisnt it most of the time...its jsut a somewhat messy sort of advantage where bad things might happen to him. But thats not much of a worry for 2700+

I disagree.  The nimzo is easily avoided with the Catalan or other Nf3 lines.  The grunfeld cannot be avoided, even when the "anti-grunfeld" 3.f3 is played Caruana and Svidler play 3...d5 anyways.  I think the grunfeld is much more of a brick wall theoretically right now than the nimzo.

I hope you are right.

I am a Grunfeld player myself!

However, man It does seem shakey at times lol.

Maybe I should study the line more lol.

cats-not-knights

I guess it is sound if you can play it... can you?
I wouldn't raccomend it to beginners, you need to know your stuff or it is easy to get wrong, I thought to practice it as defense against d4 and somentimes I do but I think I'll give it another try once I'll have further improved my skills.

forced_draw

The most topical line right now seems to be in the Russian variation 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Qb3.  Lots of top GMs are playing this from either side.  If White ever gets crushed it is not due to the opening line, where, like almost all other openings, Black seems to be struggling at least a little bit for full equality
