I am changing my repertoire a bit and switching over to the King’s Indian. I am wondering for later on off the Grunfeld is similar to it in terms of structure and plans, and so does it make sense to learn both and switch between them?

Asking IF the grunfeld is similar. Fat finger typing.

Of my 38,000 blitz games it seems lower level blitzers have deep memorization moves in the Kings Indian compared with the gruenfeld. At least that is at the 1500-1600 level. I've changed from KI with white and play the BE3 variation and it kind of takes black out of the long memory moves that black is familiar with.

As far a s black pieces I have just started learning the Gruenfeld in depth and find it to be a very fun opening. I like the KI sidelines for white and the Main line Gruenfeld as black.

For me KI makes more sense tactically during middle positions.

To answer your question: No they are very different strategy wise. A higher level player might not agree????

A lot of players who like one play the other as well, but the structures and plans are very different.  The KID is a rich opening with a variety of plans and can cover your response to c4, d4, and Nf3. I always found the Grunfeld to be much more difficult to play and can always be avoided anyway.

I’m 2000 rapid and 1800 blitz (chess.com). They are very different. KI lead to very tactical attacking positions on the enemy king and greenfield leads to dynamics in the center. I have always preferred the KID as black, because I love aggressive positions.
