Name that opening!

Yes! but they are well known variations of particular openings that should be known.

yes but if you play the opening you would recognise the position as arising from that opening. Great stuff Graw, I may need to message you on some of these, please don't put the answers up yet!

I totally agree with you MM78. Identify openings after 3-4 moves is as far as a beginner can go but more serious chess players will be able (or at least have a good chance) to identify positions that occur further into theory. I wont post the answers up yet and glad someone has liked the idea.
ps. i know the thread takes a little longer to load because there are many positions but you should have the same window open for a few minutes anyway because it may take a while to figure them all out.

You may know some of these by different names, if you do, let us know. If anyone is curious of the move orders im sure i could post them if there is demand for them. Best of luck and dont feel bad if you didnt get many right answers because some are difficult. By the way 1.e4 players should have scored better than 1.d4 players.
Are you wondering what could you do today to imrpove your chess? well, you could take a couple of minutes to do this little opening revision test. all you have to do is see if you can name/recognise each of the opening/middlegame positions below. Some are harder than others and some might be totally new positions to you. In anycase i hope it jogs some of your memories or introduces some new positions to improvers. These positions have been reached a number of times so they are relevant and i havnt just picked them from thin air, trust me =)
Best of luck and i will post the answers after some comments... Although, im sure someone will get there before me!
