Need help on opening

This is my first post on the forums, so bear with me if I'm not too sure how things work. So I usually start out with e4, then when black responds with e5 I play knight to f3. I'm hoping that black responds with knight to c6, so that I can get into the Ruy Lopez or Fried Liver Attack or any of my usual openings, but instead a lot of the time they play pawn to d6. I'm not sure the best way to play my next move, usually I play with pawn to d4 then exchange off with my knight, but then he's usually chased away by a pawn afterwards, which I feel is a waste since generally you don't want to move a piece twice in the opening. My other move that I usually play is knight to c3, just to further develop, however I'm not sure if this is recommended or if there is a better way to play it. Any ideas on how I should approach it? Here's a visual representation of what I'm talking about:

This is Philidor's Defense (C41).  The two main moves here for white are 3.d4 and 3.Bc4.  There are multiple free videos on this on youtube, and for games, look in the online databases for Morphy's games; he crushed a lot of people in this (on both sides) and it will give you an idea of the basic theory on it.  Go through those games before you tackle the more modern approaches, because at your level Morphy should be all you'll need.  Hope this helps.

But that doesn't matter unless your opponent gets a lead in development as a concequence. In that case he wouldn't as he's kicking it away with a pawn and not with a newly developed piece.
