I once beat the kid next door with 1. e4, g5; 2. e5, f6 (confronting my pawn, protecting his...)???; 3. Qh5#. But he was only little.

There is. There are many puzzles for mate in one.

There is. There are many puzzles for mate in one.
Some of them are non-trivial, too: a complicated set-up might have many possible checks, but only one of them works, and it's not necessarily obvious why a given one does not.
