Opening the center in some Nimzo-Indian lines?

In the Nimzo-Indian, it seems that Black is advised to open the center ASAP due to his lead in development. However, in those same lines, Black has given away the bishop pair away and thus perhaps suffers from opening up the center. What is the rationale behind this idea, that your lead in development will outweigh his bishop pair?
