Philidor defence - Help me learn

The reason I play through the pirc is because of lines like this:

X_PLAYER_J_X

So you are trying to avoid 4.Bc4 lines.

However, the line you showed is not how black is suppose to play.

4...Be7 is a mistake.

The move for black is 4...c6.

I play Nc3 Bc4 f4 type of set-up,castle Q-side etc.It doesnt seem like heavy-theory opening to me.

if u want more infos, why not buying a book?

"Philidor files" by Christian Bauer for example...

adumbrate

i dont like books, is it not possible otherwise?

TwoMove

So you prefer free low quality info, to getting high quality material from GM Negi, for example? It's your choice I suppose.

adumbrate

There is plenty of high quality material on this site, only not enough on philidor, I guess.

MarcoBR444

interesting.

This thread is all about getting free info.

I'm not sure whether that's any worse than the threads which are polemics against established theory. This particular thread was started after the OP asked for info about the Philidor in another thread.

adumbrate

I don't quite understand your problem of people getting free info. That's what forums are for? To answer questions, and make your understanding of chess wider. If you have a problem with that, do I not understand why you care to post comments in a thread that has "Help me learn" in the title.

Why do people want to get their games analyzed, to get "free" info? Why do people ask questions? Why do pupils ask their teacher questions? In your logic, this would be a bad thing, namely to get "free info". Because the world just can't be free.

I understand your concern as you have learnt everything you know by book. But not everything in the world goes as your eyes see it. The world has came to a new phase. Many things can be learned through digital media, and almost everything that I've learned is through chess.com, and gameplay. So if you can't respect this, I would not understand why you want to come here and attack people that want to learn.

your noah's ark doesnt work because of Bd5 and white is clearly better...

Bd5 after c5 and its even stronger on b5, then u are behind in development and your position not far from losing...

  • The higher you go up in rating and strength, the more chess knowledge you need; that mean book study. Opening study are one of the unfortunate requirement in becoming CM, there is no other way, book study is a must. There is transposition in some opening and only book study can help you in this, there is nothing free and learning opening in a forum won't give you adequate information.

If you're a chess.com member, check out Melik Khachiyan videos. He is the biggest fan of the Philidor

Move order is important to get a playable game or equality. Here is an example in the Philidor.

Now your move order is not correct.

adumbrate

I'm sorry, but if you want to dash out the line, you have to play the correct moves for black. After Nf3, you simply play Bd6.

yureesystem

Skotheim, your line 3...e5 is not correct and not even book, any candidate master or master will play 3...Nbd7, that is the book move, your move order gives white long term advantage. Just because you are able to win games in bullet or blitz doesn't mean it is sound. Think about it, double e-pawn, bishop on d6 performing as a knight and three pawn Island, cannot be the right way to haldle a defense and road to equality. Ask any CM, Master and higher and they will disagree with the way  you handle the opening.

If you are referring to the OP, this is incorrect.  3...e5 has been played at very high levels successfully.

One example where Moro takes out Anand:

It is probably akin to the same type of philosophy we see in the Berlin Wall, where the trade of queens is acceptable for Black, even with a centralized king.

Bauer actually covered these types of positions in his book on the Philidor.  To the OP, I HIGHLY recommend that you buy that book.  If you don't have much money, do some chores or whatever, save up and get it.  I will even find it on Amazon for you!

Here is a game with your first move order, at GM level:

As for your second game, it appears that 7...0-0 is more successful than ...a5, but nonetheless...I only have limited games in my database with your line, and they are far better for White.  Let's deviate just a bit earlier - here is a game that deviates from your plan at move 6, with a draw for Black.

It is only $10 if you buy it via Kindle.  I am telling you, if you want to understand this idea, invest the $10.  You will thank yourself, even if you don't keep the defense in the long term, because it is highly instructive for pawn structures and what not.  There were some lines I was not a big fan of facing, such as this (and it is part of the reason why I didn't continue with the Philidor):

As for that g4 system you asked about, it is this...
