Ruy Lopez for beginners - Chess Forums

I often have a friendly match with a pal and try the Ruy Lopez. My opponent usually plays black and ignores development. Occasionally he will chase my bishop around for a few moves with pawns. Here is an example from a recent game: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f6 3.Bb5 c6 4. Bc4 b5

I have tried googling the sequence but can't find much.

If any of y'all out there could explain the pitfalls and strengths of both positions and any tips please do!!

I suppose I should have played 3. Nxe5.... but what if I stick with Bb5 and he moves those pawns?

Of course you are right; damiano's defense😉

Bb5 is a waste of time because he plays c6 and you must move the bishop again. Play Bc4 immediately as it goes there next move anyway. Or just play Nxe5 and go for the crush!

As a beginner, your main focus should be on learning openings, of course.
