Slav defense

Hello everyone,

I am interested in a discussion and gathering of information about the Slav defense against 1.d4.

What are the general ideas of the opening one is trying to achieve as black?

What is the general flow of the defense into the middle game?

What are some common middle game positions that arise?

How many major variations are there?

Thanks for the replies.

I would like to see some good games in the Geller Gambit, or the mainline Slav with bf5 or Bg4 if anyone would like to post some?

Does white always respond with a4? Or do they have other good options?

After 1.d4 d4 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 dxc4 we have a basic position in Slav. 5.a4 is probably best, but White doesn't have to play it. Other interesting possibilities are 5.e4 (Geller gambit), 5.e3 (played by Alekhine), 5.g3 or 5.Ne5!?

I see, thank you.

Does 5.g3 potentially transpose into a c6 by black open Catalan?

The game you posted was very interesting. But the games I have seen in the Geller Gambit all seem to revolve around white using the kings knight and the Queen on f3 to attack the f7 pawn?
