Which chess engine would you say is better with understanding positional play as well as opening theory etc?

Both are good. gold.png Though they don't understand the positional play tongue.png, they simply calculate tactical variations.

Engines are decent in the opening, but are stronger with opening books. Fishbook Dynamic and Stockfish 9 should be sufficient. Komodo is programmed to maneuver more and thus plays a more positional game than Stockfish.

Stockfish in my short experience so far is pure brute force.
