The King's Gambit unsound?

Wow, a lot of good discussion :)

Lets keep this going!

Btw, King's Bishop Gambit or King's Knight gambit? :P

I've been using the latter just because I'm more familiar with it and not being able to castle can be a bit annoying(just because it's harder to bring the Rook out), AND I got Joe's Winning with the King's gambit with discusses the Knight's Gambit so I've just been using that.

You guys always like to oversimplify things.

"...he oversimplified" (heehee!).

I would improvise a joke off of yours, but these King's Gambit guys are way too serious to tolerate uninvited humor in their thread.

AndyClifton

And that doesn't merely encourage you to do it all the more? (sometimes I just don't understand people).

Cut it out! The King's Gambit guys are 'gonna get peeved! Sheesh!

AndyClifton

Ooh, I'm all a-tremble!  I mean, what're they gonna say?  "Get outta here or we'll give you a pawn so you can uncastle our king and wreck our kingside!"

BirdsDaWord

HEY!  I heard that - don't make me pull out the f-pawn on you!  ;-)

Pfren, I have discussed ideas with Buecker before.  Even my idea, 1. e4 e6 2. Nf3 g5 - I got trashed by almost everyone on chesspub - except Buecker.  He gave some pleasant (and not terribly critical) analysis of the idea, showing a game where he played an almost identical setup that I was recommending.  I still received a lot of flack from the other members, but I have a feeling that if he was the one who recommended it, then the other members would be less feisty!  Wink

He also gave me some good feedback on a general comment I made about the Dutch - I believe he is a very open-minded chess mind.  I have seen some of his games - I remember a blur about one chess game - I think he was playing the White side of the Sicilian - and his pawn pushes almost looked insane!  Yet, they were principled - and he won the game.  He also used to play Bird's Opening, and almost wrote a book on it too.

I think the game I posted is very spirited, and in the spirit of the older King's Gambit.  However, I think for me, I would prefer playing a more positional approach, first going for d4 and playing for Nd5 and Bxf4.  That being said, the early Nc3 sac and going for the throat approach is DEFINITELY worth the study!

Humor! I can admit when I'm wrong. Do it quite often!

Electric, I cannot explore your openings since I am not a full member anymore - but tell me, what SISSY openings do you play instead of the MANLY King's Gambit?

AndyClifton

Oh yeah, go ahead and ignore me, why don't ya!

BirdsDaWord

@ Andy - "I'm not listening!"

BirdsDaWord

Melvin, this may be a bit wrong, since he is an FM, but I think his problems began with 3. d4.  That pawn on d4 was a THORN in his side.  Not sure if I agree with his approach.  Very optimistic, but I don't like it.

AndyClifton

Yeah?!  Well, I'm made of rubber and you're made of glue!

BirdsDaWord

Andy, I've got a glue gun, and I'm not afraid to use it!

BirdsDaWord

LOL - I don't want to get too off track, because this is a good forum.  I think the discussion of the King's Bishop's Gambit vs. King's Knight's Gambit is interesting, but we also have the Keres Gambit.  Of course, this might not be to everyone's liking, after allowing Qh4+ Ke2... but the King's Bishop Gambit allows Qh4+ Kf1.  That might be an interesting perk to discuss.  The Nf3 gambit allows ...g5, but that would be a critical discussion - is the Kieseritsky the best way to handle the KG?

I've been playing e4 as white and e5 in response to e4 as black. I try to get the very sophisticated and highly intellectual Ruy Lopez in either case.  Obviously I've encountered the King's Gambit, Scotch, Itallian game, etc. I play the the Kieseritsky when I get a king's Gambit as black. I've had pretty good luck with it and won a game OTB with it a couple weeks ago. It was quite a macho affair indeed. I'm learning the Marshall Attack in the Ruy Lopez, and its a fun, take - no - prisoners kind of an opening for black. Makes me feel like a pirate.

Okay, I guess you are not too SISSY then!  You are hereby allowed to enter the He-Man Woman Haters Club!

Harrrrrrr

I used to play 3... d5 all the time against the KNG...got crappy positions a lot (even though I have a very good score against that opening).  But then I decided to start playing 3... g5, and have enjoyed myself ever since. Smile

I have played it against my (old microprocessor) computer a lot...including one of the weirdest opening transpositions I've ever seen:  1 e4 c6 2 f4 (just to get it out of book, and cuz I hate the CK) e5 3 Nf3 ef (!).

Then too the KNG features that rarest of things...an opening var (which used to be a major one btw 150 years ago or so) with the rook being the first piece developed:  1 e4 e5 2 f4 ef 3 Nf3 g5 4 h4 g4 5 Ne5 h5 6 Bc4 Rh7.
