Thoughts on the Scandinavian Defense?
You mean here or at the highest level?
If you tap it into YouTube there are loads of vids from both the black side and the white side. John Bartholomew has some good stuff on it. I think its not so fashionable today in general and I highly doubt you would see it in the Grand Chess Tour for example. I think there might be some kind of 'bust' that has been worked out with computer assistance. Or at least black has very limited scope to play for a win vs accurate white play.
My friend plays the Scandinavian and she is an exceptionally good player. She always succeeds in confusing her opponents when she plays this opening.
My son's coach switched him to the Scandinavian in the middle of 1st grade, after he had learned basics of various e4 e5 lines. He did not want him spending too much time on opening lines , and thought that he could have a reasonable opening as black vs e4, and they would spend lessons on other things. It has worked very well. He wins a fair number of games as black, with a focus on creating a weak pawn (minority attack). It's not sexy, and there are lines against it that surprised him and required review, but it seems like a fine opening for people at his level. Now, 2 years later and having hit about 1600 - 1700 rating, they are working on the Sicilian - coach feels his tactics, endgames and middle game are decent enough to allow much more time to the openings, and he wants more tactical opportunities in the openings now. But it has been a great, simplifying opening that has been very convenient for a few years.
The Scandinavian is fine. I think the Qd8 line is best. Lots of people bash it without understanding why it's played. There's basically only 3 main systems you have to deal with:
Then a plan with a7-a6 and b7-b5, with a quick ...c5 is quite strong:
Or there is:
And then there is everything else, when you can just play normal moves. For example:
So Black has to memorise very little, gets a solid position in basically every line, and achieves Caro-Kann structures without having to suffer the lines of theory. I'm seriously considering switching from the CK to the Scandi!
I've often run into problems when having to play against the Scandanavian Defense, particularly the 3...Qa5 line. I tend to have fewer difficulties when I play an early Bd2 to break the pin.
Because while it is not refuted, it is a tad weaker (similar issues with the Alekhine, Pirc, Modern, etc) than the "Big 4".
When you have 1...e5, 1...e6, 1...c5, and 1...c6 as better options, no reason to play the slightly inferior lines, even if they are not refuted.
Certainly playable and fun! Mamedyarov just won in Paris zwith it against Anand
Wow. Beating Anand is pretty impressive.
1...e5, 1...e6, 1...c5, and 1...c6
Open Games, French, Sicilian, and Caro-Kann.

Mamedyarov just played it twice yesterday in the Grand Chess Tour
