What openings did you start your chess career with?

I think it would be interesting to know what openings everyone played when they first started playing chess seriously. For me it was Kings gambit, french defence(winawer variation) and if memory serves correct kings indian.,,,or maybe it was queens gambit...I did start playing Kings Indian when I was still about 1200 rated just cant remember exactly when I first started playing it.

FizzyBand

I started with e4 as white and e4 e5 as black. At ~800 I began (albeit with little knowledge) playing the Sicilian. I still play e4 to this day as well as the Sicilian

ThrillerFan

I started with d4 as White, QGD and French as Black.

I played the French like a baby becomes left or right handed.  Experimented with responses that fight for the center, got comfortable with e6 and d5, asked if it had a name, and after reading Winning Chess Tactics, Winning Chess Strategies, and How To Win in the Chess Endings, my first opening book was Winning With the French by Wolfgang Uhlmann and next was Play the Queens Gambit by Marovic.  Learned the exchange for White and orthodox lines for Black.

That was 1995/1996 school year (my junior year of undergrad).  Today? I still play the French, but against d4, while fully capable of playing the QGD, I play the KID with an occasional Dutch.

daxypoo
d4 and 99% of time queens gambit as white, caro kann vs e4, and slav vs d4

Most of the times, I start with e4 (white), and e6 (black). That's probably the wrong move, but I'm not very good at chess and I just just have fun trying new openings and such.

BonTheCat

Anything and everything, except the Damiano Defence against the King's Gambit.

CrazyCubing

I started with the e4 e5 opening, then I started using d4 for most games (with white) and the sicilian defence (for black) . now I still do the d4 opening with white, but with black I like playing kings or queens pawn gambits(or gambits declined, whichever)

TheoLomone

I started with open games (e4 e5) and 80% of them were Four knights Game Spanish Version, sometimes Petrov's Defense and Ruy Lopez. Later I took on Sicilian and Nimzowitsch.

Confused-psyduck

a3, Ra2 as white. a6, ra7 as black. It is important to develop strong pieces such as rooks quickly, also by opening on the sides I feel very safe.

Now I play birds opening for white, throw in an occasional scotch gambit and Evans gambit. I never play d4.

For black I play Alekhine’s, Budapest Gambit, and occasional Dutch and King’s Indian.

IJELLYBEANS

I started with the King's Pawn Opening, then progressed into the London system and Stonewall Opening, before settling on a mixed range.
