What Scarblac says. Against 1.e4: Sicilian, Petroff, Ruy/Italian. I don't know much about responses to 1.d4, I'm studying parts of the Indian system but I'm not reccomending it. With white: Ruy, Italian, Scotch.

ok ty any variations of the sicilian to recommend???

CoachConradAllison

Dont play the sicillian unless you want to spend a long time learning it.

As white I advise playing a closed variation, perhaps the grand prix.

Try a few of them. You'll see by yourself which fits you the best.

Note that the Sicilian is not an easy system. I'm still experimenting and I'll probably never stop doing that.

ok which variations should i try??

MapleDanish

I think it's a lot of trial and error.  Find what you like, make sure it's sound (sound enough that at least a couple top GM's use it), and learn it well.  I usually consider myself an extremely agressive/sharp player... and yet my best performance (historically) has come from the black side of the Berlin defense.  Figure that one out.

and im very good at lots of tactics i just need to work on my strategy and openings(im very good at endgames too)

depends what you consider strong at tactics and endgame. a guy in my club is always out of book and refuses to study openings because he feels those microadvantages openingtheori gives you is waste of time. he have a rating close to 2100 on tactics, endgame and calculation alone

thank you every body i think im going to try out the accelarated dragon and benoni..... i would be alot better at tactics but my calculation stinks....any pointers on that one??

cmi14

 okay  ill try

Ricardo_Morro

As White, try Closed Sicilian against Sicilian Defense.

What time controls do you play? Calculation requires practice. Don't play live games shorter than 45 to 60 minutes per side. Longer is even better. Analyse your game(s) the next day and spend adequate time on the key positions.

As for white openings, the Queen's Gambit can give you the kind of position and applies the kind of pressure you spoke of in the OP. At your rating level, the opposition is likely not heavily booked up on the defenses.
