Hi all,

I used to not play gambits at all, but now, I decided to give it a try.  Which gambit as White gives you the best innitiatve?  In other words, which do you think is the best gambit?  Please respond as soon as possible.  Thanks.

Rapter_Michael

queens gambit is ok and evans is my favourite

TitanCG

That's what the smiley is for. ;)

I think it would have to be the King's Gambit.

TheBigDecline

The Smith-Morra Gambit.

Thank you all for quickly responding (7 new comments in 20 minutes, wow!)  Laughing   I'll take a look at each one.

Yes, the main reason I wanted to start playing gambits is because I wanted to make my game more exciting.  I play the English as White, which is not the most exciting opening...

benedictus

Blackmar Diemer Gambit with 4. c3 and 5. Qxc3 gets a lot of initiative

Phife_Dawg

My favorite is the Ryder Gambit in the BDG. Huge initiative, and you can get into it most games as white, whereas most e4 e5 gambits only happen less than half of the time (sicilian, french, etc...)

Benko for me...i use it against 1.d4 whenever possible..

Melvernboy, what do you find scary about it?  Do you usually "accept" or "decline"?  I would like to know more, if you do not mind.

When I play against 1.e4 e5 2. f4 I usually jump for joy haha.

Yeah i used to also.

Now i ask my opponent since you made me so happy

.... should i give you kiss on the lips or the kiss of death.

Dude runs away as both are scary lol.

For the ladies i only suggest the kiss of death to make them quit.

TitanCG

Declining is usually easier because it leads to "normal" positions.

royalbishop

I always decline ....the reason for the gambit is to catch a sucker accepting it.

tjdiem

tthanks everyone! I'm still deciding.  Just for people looking at this forum to know: it's not too late to suggest something.

I told you that the english is boring. The truth always seem to be revealed. These are the gambits i play

Smith morra gambit, scotch gambit, benko/volga gambit, budapest gambit(very rarely), latvian gambit(rarely), urosov gambit, phillidor countergambit(rarely since the opportunity never arises and the gambit is completely flawed)

TitanCG

How is the English boring? Maybe if you're fianchettoing both bishops or something it might be but there are plenty of opportunities for active play.

Yes, cognismantis knows me in real life, and I sometimes do fianchetto both bishops.  keyword: sometimes

Talfan1

Flohr Mykanos variation of the English is very exciting for white

cognismantis

Yes, I conclude the problem not to be that the English is boring but my play against it is. Back when I did not play Nf6, every game I played was very closed and drawn. I would basically copy the opponent's moves. In fact, during my games(OTB) I drew 3 times and won once. I remember that one game was completely closed up, in such degree that my exchange up was little help and my opponent and I agreed to a draw.

One benefit of the King's Gambit is that you can get to play it more often than many of the others as e4 e5 is pretty common.
