the English at least allows you to develop the queen

That’s not the point of the English. You aren’t playing the English to develop your queen.

I’m talking from a possibility standard- but yes you don’t play the English to develop your queen

Alright, let’s actually be serious now. The bird is a weak opening that weakens the king unnecessarily. f4 is supposed to control e5, but d4 is a much stronger first move that also controls e5 that doesn’t weaken the king. The English allows for many flexible, solid setups that white will utilize on. e3 and d4, g3, and Bg2, etc. I’ll say e4 is better to control d5, but the English is perfectly playable. As a Sicilian lover, the English sounds like an interesting choice to take in mind if I’m unable to play e4 for whatever reason.

Sure, but doesn’t this also apply to the bird where it’s flexible and you could play d3, e4 in the future?

But yeah English is far superior we all know bird dies to e5

Well to be fair black rarely gets to take good advantage of the white king and white usually gets to castle. Unless black plays e5 fr fr fr froms gambit

english over bird in a heartbeat

The English is more sound. However, most players have a system against the English, while most people are clueless against the bird.

English for sure. The bird opening exposes your king on the e1-h4 diagnol

The English is better

They’re two completely different openings. There isn’t really much to compare other than the fact that they’re both flank openings, because the positions that come out of them and the positional and tactical demands, which are vastly different from each other.

That being said, if you take care enough to not obliterate your kingside while playing the Bird’s Opening (From’s Gambit isn’t even that much. It’s quite easy to avoid any complications that can arise from accepting it) then they’re probably equal.

I like to mix it up by playing g3, if response is d5 then f4 transposing into leningrad bird. If e5 then c4 into english. If anything other than e5 or d5 choice is up to you - other transpositions are available too from g3

im assuming that you are talking about the birds opening, and the english is definitely better but some lines are complicated

I might also add that I play for fun, and even though english is objectively better, my opposition is better prepared for it compared to bird and sometimes English can become a snoozefest. Transitioning into bird will be a far more tactical game than the english (usually) and therefore imo often more fun even if not as good. Thats why I transition into both as variety is the spice of life.
