Knowledge is acquired faster when you are motivated. With a state of mind where you know what to read or analyze, you will like what you read, instead of causing a negative sensation, so if you intend to study chess themes, try to make it when you feel fit for it.

You can spend hours analyzing a game you had, an opening or a line of defense that didn’t work out as it should, to improve what you set out to play. It’s a good step, however, you are going to spend a lot of effort. To improve your level studying your games it’s better to cover a greater number of them that don’t come from a single game and the most important part is to recognize your mistakes and put solutions to solve them.

Memorizing through repetition is a way of learning but I do not recommend it as the best method. The best thing is that you relate your games with others and form a general analysis of what has worked and what has not, so your brain immediately relates the error you made during a middlegame or an endgame. Try to relate what you did when you won to what you did when you lost.

Having several games with different people helps a lot as you will face different methods, different openings, different defenses and especially many lines. When you see something new that you don’t know how to answer, I recommend that you write it down in a notebook and then look for the solution to your problem.
