He's been around a long time.  He played tha Najdorf when Najdorf was still a kid?   That's being ahead of his time.  Time was Satasiere's friend.

Oh yeah, Cuellar!  I remember him because he played in the Stockholm 1962 interzonal, and I once had one of those booklets of the games (published I think by Chess Digest).

He beat Korchnoi in that one too, in round 2.  Poor Vik got off to a tough start in that tourney; here was his round 1 game (which has always stuck in my head for its unusual final situation):

I read the 2007 article. Very interesting, batgirl. btw, have you ever researched the first US Women's Championships?

I though no one would ever ask!  :-)

See my web site on the First 17 years of Organized Women's Chess in America.

Thanks for the info, I believe that Yanofski lived in Winnipeg ( also sometimes called Winterpeg in jest  lol ).

If it was me, I wouldn't be joking (after all, I call San Francisco Freezco). Smile

Weird game.  It seems impossible he couldn't win, but he knows more than I do, that's for sure.

I simply avoid anyplace with the possiblility of turning frigid.

Thanks for the update Batgirl, I had not heard that Abe Yanofski had a older brother and that they did not meet until all those years later ( after leaving the Ukraine ). We do have a lot of folks of Ukrainian descent here, I'm related to some by marriage  lol.

As for things getting cold up here I must say that we are quite lucky in Alberta as the Chinook winds do warm things up from time to time.

My kind of thread, batgirl!

OldHastonian

Interesting post...the winner Isaac Kashdan played at the Hastings Congress before the war, very strong player but little heard of relatively speaking.

AndyClifton

He became quite the little TD as well.

I forgot pikchurs aren't allowed anymore but at least Tony's post looks really random now.

AndyClifton

I've always thought ivan looked kinda like Madame Blavatsky.

Browne kinda hated him.

Yeah, and see how boring that makes everything?  I was really getting to like that lady too (I think she's the one who taught Carla Tortelli).

AndyClifton

Hey, did Walter Browne like Walter Brown?

What? He's an ass you say?

For anyone with a gripe against him can find some satisfaction in his Interzonal record (he bombed every time).

AndyClifton

Naw, I meant Walter Brown the TD (is this a trap or something I'm walking right into, you wily pooch, you?).

AndyClifton

We did always used to talk though about WB not being able to do anything other than winning the US Champ.

Yonic preservation makes decisions so much easier, no.
